The Valley Center Chamber of Commerce was planning a visit by well-known TV sportsman Harold Ensley. Tickets were being sold for the banquet for sport fishing enthusiasts who could have dinner with Ensley and attend The Harold Ensley Show after dinner. A.J. Michaels of the Valley Center Motor Company was hosting Ensley through the assistance and sponsorship of the Ford Motor Company.

Miss Karen Carey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Sam Carey of rural Valley Center, was one of 17 women nominated as a homecoming queen candidate at Kansas State University. Carey was a graduate of Valley Center High School and a member of Phi Upsilon Omicron home economics professional honorary; Chimes, junior women's scholastic honorary; Home Economics Teaching Club, Associated Women Students, and YWCA.

U.S. Navy Data Systems Technician 1st Class Lawrence R. Hadsall Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence R. Hadsall of Valley Center, visited the city of Chinhae, Korea, while deployed to the Western Pacific aboard the destroyer escort USS Cook.

Linda Murray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Murray of Valley Center, was crowned homecoming queen at St. John's College, Winfield. She was chosen by the student body from among five semifinalists. Murray was a sophomore and planned to become a social worker.


40 years ago

The Valley Center High School math department purchased a RadioShack TRS80 mini-computer to supplement the math curriculum. Math teacher Mike Kimber proposed the purchase to the school's curriculum committee.

Katherine Vogt of Valley Center was named Woman of the Year by the Valley Center Business & Professional Women. She had been in the banking business since she graduating from high school, becoming vice president and auditor for the Arkansas Valley State Bank. She was the Valley Center club's guest at the Wichita Council of Business and Professional Women at the Canterbury Inn in Wichita. Evelyn Schumacher was the speaker.


35 years ago

Pvt. Bradley D. Cox, son of Charles M. Cox of Valley Center, completed a motor transport operator course at the Army Training Center, Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. Cox was a 1982 graduate of Valley Center High School.

Mike Conner, a sophomore from Valley Center, was involved in the Ottawa University drama department's medieval morality production of "Everyman." Conner played the role of Confession in the production. The play was written in the 15th century and was based on the vices and virtues within the soul of man.


30 years ago

Air Force Airman Dauice Turner, son of Kent Turner of rural Valley Center, arrived for duty at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. Turner served as a dental assistant.

Carolyn Mosiman of rural Valley Center was one of seven Emporia State University students who joined the Student Home Economics Association. The organization promotes the value of home economics and provides students with opportunities for professional development.


25 years ago

David Kitchen of Valley Center was a member of the chorus of "Hello, Dolly!" a musical being presented by the Kansas State University theater program. Kitchen was a sophomore in computer engineering.

Paul Day, son of John and Victoria Day of Valley Center, was home from Sakhalin Island, Russia, for two weeks. He worked as a pipefitter for a refinery in Russia.


20 years ago

Todd Penner of Valley Center completed his commercial pilot certificate at Kansas State University. Pilots with the certificate have completed at least 190 hours of flight training since their first flight. Penner was a senior in aeronautical technology.

Valley Center High School geography teacher Pat Thomas was one of 29 teachers from the U.S. to participate in the 1998 United States-Newly Independent States Awards for Excellence in Teaching English and American Studies. He traveled to Namangan, Uzbekistan, where he stayed with a teacher and had the opportunity to teach about Valley Center and the United States to students there.

Ed Pavey of Valley Center worked with the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center and was a guest of Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius when she signed a proclamation designating May 14 as "Kansas Operation Lifesaver Day."

Among those earning all-A scholastic honors for the 2003 summer session at Pittsburg State University were Christopher Johnson, son of Charles Johnson, senior in automotive technology, and Earl Wilder, son of Denna-Vey Elaine Wilder, a student in technology management, both from Valley Center.

Valley Center put it all together for a 54-13 football win against Campus. The Hornets set several individual and team records in the victory. More importantly for Coach John Black is that it was a win.

Valley Center Calvary Baptist Church members and staff would present Judgement House the last few days of October. According to associate pastor Jason Ramsey, Judgement House was a walk-through drama to take the place of haunted houses as a venue for the Halloween season. People attending the drama "Web of Lies" would experience the story of how people using the Internet sometimes make choices that can cause deadly situations.

Larry Pope of Newton won a $25 gift certificate to any Valley Center Chamber business from the Michael C. Porter CPA accounting firm. Porter had the drawing for the Valley Center Chamber of Commerce Buy Local campaign.

A fire broke out at 81 Speedway east of Valley Center, but it was not due to a crash or racing of any form. A trash load in a Waste Connections truck caught fire. The driver called 911 and dumped his load on the Speedway's concrete parking lot so the Sedgwick County Fire Department could put it out and his truck would not be damaged.
