Middle school runners do well at Newton
By The News staff
Last Updated: October 11, 2018

Valley Center Middle School cross country teams competed at Newton's Centennial Park Oct. 2.

The length of each race was increased for this meet. The seventh-graders ran 1.5 miles (normally one), while the eighth-graders ran two miles (normally 1.5).

"This will give the kids a taste of what it is going to be like in high school as they transition to the 5K distance," coach Lee Owens said.

Owens said seventh-graders seemed to adjust better as the boys finished in third place, led by Holden McDaniel with a third-place finish.

The seventh-grade girls finished second, one point ahead of third-place Prairie Hills.

"Great to see this happen as we coach that each point counts and can make a difference," Owens said.

For the eighth-grade girls, Addie Fitch moved up through the field to finish 10th.

Joshua Hailey led the eighth-grade boys with a seventh-place finish.

Valley Center's league meet was rescheduled for Oct. 11.
