Carter, 11, and James Carter, 14, both of Valley Center, were granted junior memberships in the American Angus Association at St. Joseph, Mo., announced Frank Richards, secretary. Their memberships enabled them to register their purebred Angus at regular membership rates and provided them the privileges of the association until they reached age 21. At that time, they would be eligible to convert to lifetime memberships in the association. Errol Stepp, son of Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Stepp of Valley Center, brought the evening message for the First Christian Church of Valley Center. He was the minister of youth and Christian education at the First Christian Church of Dodge City. He graduated from Midwest Christian College in Oklahoma City. 45 years ago Chris Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Allen of rural Valley Center, pledged Delta Delta Delta sorority at Kansas State University. Dennis Galyon qualified for the president's honor roll at Central State College in Edmond, Okla. He was attending Wichita State University as a senior at the time. 40 years ago Ten Boy Scouts from Troop 494 in Valley Center spent a weekend earning their sailing badges at Cheney Lake. Scoutmaster Don Witham said he and the boys spent the weekend sailing in four boats. Those who made the trip were Rick Frantz, Gene Hackney, Eric Ireland, Joe Withham, Danny Soule, Matt Hunter, Darrin Spillman, Phil Collins, Tom Withham and Jim Riggs. Kevin Garren, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Garren, was given a residence hall scholarship for the upcoming school year at KU. Recipients were selected on the basis of academic achievement, character and other merits. He graduated from Valley Center High School in 1978. 35 years ago The Valley Center Kwik Shop convenience store at Fifth and Meridian was sold to Dillons. Lyle Blue, owner and manager for 16 years, announced the sale. He had operated the store under a franchise and sold it back to the parent company. He has no plans to retire and no plans to open another business in Valley Center. Phoebe Patterson of Valley Center was a member of the Friends University pom-pon squad that earned top honors at the 1983 National Cheerleading Association summer camp. The squad earned the Award of Excellence plaque, the highest award at the camp, and was recognized for its continuous spirit and for the best home routine performed at the camp. 30 years ago Carol Robbins of Valley Center received a best of show award in the Wichita Oil Painting Society show at the Wichita Art Museum. She displayed 30 of her paintings — mostly oil on canvas, oil on paper, watercolors and acrylics — at the Edna Bushow Library. Robbins was a member of the Wichita Oil Painting Society, Community Art Guild and the Kansas Pastel Society. Steve Gerety, son of Charlies and Evelyn Gerety of Valley Center, was attending the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, Ark. He was a 1986 graduate of Valley Center High School. 25 years ago Gregg Waggoner, son of Dee and Venita Waggoner of Valley Center, recorded an inspirational music album, "Rodeo Preacher." He had been in the ministry for 17 years and was pastor of Bible Baptist Temple in Amarillo, Texas. A 1972 graduate of Valley Center High School, Waggoner credited Dean Dellinger for the "personal training of his voice." Valley Center High School seniors Stacia Decker and Jarrod Mann were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. 20 years ago Laura Martin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Martin of Valley Center, was named to the School of Fine Arts honor roll for the spring semester at the University of Kansas. She was a sophomore in liberal arts and sciences/fine art. Carolyn McGinn was heading up the Little Arkansas Agricultural and Rural Nonpoint Source Pollution Educational Program, a project designed to test non-point source pollution in the river and educate residents about pollution problems. 15 years ago Two Valley Center High School golfers broke the school record for individual girls' scores. Amy Kucharo now holds the record with a 48, while Lauren Schwab shot a 49. Hornet coach Mike McCormick said the girls didn't know they had broken the record until he told them. Karen Harris, daughter of Scott Harris and granddaughter of Kenneth and Marcelyn Harris of Valley Center, was working in Belmopan, Belize, Central America. She chose to be on a mission trip for the coming year. She was teaching at the Belize Christian Academy, a nondenominational, English-speaking school. She would return to her college studies the following year at the University of Tennessee. 10 years ago Joshua Collins, son of David and Kathy Collins of Valley Center, received a presidential scholarship from Cowley College. He was majoring in biology. Karen Slater of Valley Center was named to the Pittsburg State University All-A Scholastic Honor Roll for the summer session. To qualify for the honor, a student must complete at least six semester hours, receive a grade of A in all credit course work for the session and not grade of I in any course during the summer. Slater was a senior majoring in family and consumer sciences. 5 years ago Waste Management negotiated a contract with Valley Center to get the city's only trash and recycling franchise through the year 2020, according to Gary Black, the company's district manager. Demolition crews were razing homes in the 200 block of South Meridian so Casey's General Store could begin construction toward a planned opening early in 2014. |
