Eighth-graders win, seventh loses to Goddard
By The News staff
Last Updated: September 13, 2018

The Valley Center Middle School football teams split games against Goddard last week. The eighth-graders won, while the seventh-grade team lost.

The Hornets will play at Maize South Sept. 13 and at Eisenhower Sept. 20.

Eighth grade — The Hornets got their first win of the season Sept. 6, beating Goddard at home 28-8.

Valley Center started with a quick strike. Nolan Bevan took the first play from scrimmage 65 yards for a touchdown. Eli Lefto ran in the conversion for the 8-0 lead.

The Hornet defense started just as tough, stopping Goddard on downs at midfield.

Valley Center drove 55 yards in 12 plays and finished with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Lefto to Garrett Rudick. Bevan ran in the conversion, giving the Hornets a 16-0 lead.

Valley Center kept it going. On its third conversion, the Hornets methodically marched down the field and scored on a five-yard run by Cameron Bowyer. Valley led 22-0 at the half.

Goddard opened the second half with a long drive that was stopped at the Hornets' 15-yard line. Three plays later, Bevan showed his speed again by running 88 yards for another touchdown.

Brayden Boyd intercepted a Goddard pass on the Hornet 5-yard line.

Goddard scored late.

Seventh grade — The Hornets lost to Goddard 28-0 at home Sept. 6.
