Valley Center corner Dakota Kieso tackles a Garden City running back in the first half Friday. HORNET FOOTBALL: Valley beats Garden City on the road By Chris Strunk Last Updated: September 13, 2018 The Valley Center High School football team got its first win of the 2018 season, beating Garden City 41-20 on the road Friday (Sept. 7). It was Scott L'Ecuyer's first win as head coach. The 1-1 Hornets led the 0-2 Buffaloes 13-8 after the first quarter and 27-14 at the half. "I'm happy for our kids," L'Ecuyer said. "They worked hard. They put a lot of hard work in this summer. They deserve this. I'm happy for my coaching staff. They worked a ton, especially this last week. … I'm happy for the fans back home." Valley Center QB Parker Schrater threw for three touchdowns, all to different receivers. Running back Larry Wilson scored three touchdowns, including a 99-yard punt return, which is a school record. Zach Williams scored on an 85-yard pass play to put the Hornets on the board in the first quarter. Wilson scored in the second quarter on an 18-yard run. Schrater threw a touchdown pass to Amado Carillo to end the half up by two scores. The Hornets had a key fourth-down stop deep in their end of the field in the third quarter. Wilson then scored on a 93-yard run. "It was huge," L'Ecuyer said. "… They drive all the way down and we get the stop. That was probably the biggest momentum swing in the game." Schrater tacked on another score in the fourth quarter, finding Blayne Hightower on a route down the left seam. The Hornets had two touchdowns taken away by penalties, including another punt return by Wilson. Valley Center will host Maize South Sept. 14. |
