The 3,200-square-foot former library building on West First in Valley Center will be auctioned later this year.

Former library building going on auction block

The former Valley Center library building on West First Street will be sold at auction.

The city council last month approved a contract with McCurdy Auction. An auction date has not been set.

The building has been mostly vacant and unused since the library moved to its new home at 314 E. Clay this summer.

At least one council member suggested that the building be used as a courthouse for municipal court hearings. The courtroom at the Public Safety Building on East Fifth Street is often overcrowded.

City Administrator Scott Hildebrand said the city plans to remodel or expand the Public Safety Building and possibly utilize City Hall to ease crowding in the meantime.

"The city has no use for the building in and of itself," Hildebrand said.

Other council members said it would benefit the city to sell the building and get it on the tax role.

The 2018 Sedgwick County appraisal of the property and 3,200-square-foot building was $160,330.

The city council agreed to pay $1,400 for McCurdy's marketing and auction services.
