Miss Jo Ann Duncan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allen F. Duncan of Valley Center, began classes at the St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in Wichita. She was in a three-year diploma program in professional nursing.

Mr. and Mrs. Richard Schnackenberg, Susan and Judith drove to the Wichita airport to see Mrs. Schnackenberg's mother, Mrs. Zoe Brant, who was flying to Flint, Mich., to attend the Dodder reunion Labor Day.

Valley Center police Chief A.L. Pitts announced the receipt of a portable laboratory unit. Valley Center police officers Herron, Watkins, Morgan and Armstrong attended a three-day training seminar on the use of the new crime-fighting equipment.

Wayne Beckham, son of Mr. and Mrs. W.C. Beckham of Valley Center, and his wife, both of Grand Prairie, Texas, were among some 200 people who were guests of President and Mrs. Richard Nixon at a birthday party at the White House honoring the First Lady. Beckham was the editor and publisher of a country and western music fan magazine.

Kansas Gov. Robert Bennett and Bob Stephan, the Republican candidate for attorney general, were among the political dignitaries and candidates in Valley Center for the Kansas Campers Association parade. The parade was part of the nearly 2,000 Kansas campers who packed the Kansas Coliseum grounds for the annual fall business meeting. In addition to the parade, the Lions Club held a pancake feed, the Chamber of Commerce had bingo, and booths with displays were set up for campers to enjoy.

Valley Center-based Warner Company added two new employees. Kay Girrens, Wichita, was the new bookkeeper while Bonnie Regier, Valley Center, was hired as kitchen designer and salesperson.

Mary K. Lickey, Radioman 2nd Class USNR and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Lickey of Valley Center, joined the Wichita-area Naval Reserve color guard. She had been drilling with the unit for two months. In November, she was scheduled to go with her unit for two weeks of training in Guam.

After completing basic training, Randall L. Hutcherson, son of Dane and Suzzane Hutcherson of rural Valley Center, was assigned to Lowry Air Force Base, Colo., where he would receive specialized instruction in munitions and weapons maintenance. He was a 1982 graduate of Christian Challenge High School in Wichita.


30 years ago

A field of wheat stubble serving as a parking lot for the Ternings' annual steam and gas engine show in the 7700 block of North Hoover caught fire. There were no injuries, but 26 cars suffered an estimated $12,500 damage. Valley Center fire Chief Bob Tormey said the fire apparently started when a catalytic converter came into contact with the stubble. The show's organizer, Tom Terning, had no comment concerning the fire, which burned nearly 1 1/2 acres.

The 11th annual Terning Steam and Gas Engine show was held over Labor Day weekend. More than 10,000 people from across the Midwest enjoyed New York-style hot dogs, demonstrations from an old-time blacksmith and live musicians.


25 years ago

Steve Swafford, son of John Swafford of Valley Center, graduated from the electronics technology program at Amtech Institute in Wichita. While at the institute, he earned the "I'm A Pro Award," had perfect attendance and was named to the president's honor roll.

Christi Boese, daughter of Larry and Diane Boese of Valley Center, received a four-year, $4,000 merit award from Sterling College. She was also given activity awards for vocal music and theater. Boese planned to major in music education/Christian education.

OSSA Robert Venditti, son of Mike and Judy Venditti of Valley Center, returned from a six-month deployment aboard the USS Crommelin in the Western Pacific and Arabian Gulf. Homeported at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, the ship was part of the Middle East task force team to perform maritime intercept operations while patrolling the Gulf. Venditti was a 1995 graduate of Valley Center High School

Sandy Munsell, daughter of Cathy and Carl Munsell of Valley Center, enrolled at Wichita State University for the fall semester. She was a 1998 graduate of Valley Center High School and would be a freshman majoring in accounting.

Marine Corps Pfc. Terry L. McClure, son of Theresa G. and Brent Hobson of Valley Center, completed basic assault amphibian vehicle repairman courses at Camp Pendleton, Calif. He received training in repair and maintenance of vehicles used to transport troops and supplies from Navy ships to the beach during amphibious assaults. McClure was a 2001 graduate of Valley Center High School.

Clair and Eleanor Evans were selected as one of two families in north Sedgwick County who had owned a family farm for more than a century. His grandfather Isaac Evens purchased the farm for $25 an acre in 1900. The farm was located 1 1/2 miles west of Meridian on 69th North. The Sedgwick County Farm Bureau presented them with a sign and certificate indicating they were owners of a century farm. They had to own at least 80 acres of the original farm to be considered for the recognition.

Four students from Valley Center graduated from Level 1 of the Future Astronaut Training Program at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson. They were Andrew Richards, son of Dianna and Gary Richards; Corrigan Burks, son of Jack and Angela Burks; Kade Miller, son of Kent and Danielle Miller; and David Chandler, son of Brenda Chandler. The week-long introductory astronaut camp was for students entering seventh- through 10th-grades and emphasized teamwork, leadership and problem-solving.

Robert J. Crow, son of Billy Crow of Valley Center, was promoted to the rank of colonel in the U.S. Army National Guard. A 28-year military veteran, Crow was commander of the Training Center Command at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas.

Valley Center police responded to a two-car, non-injury accident at Dexter and Allen. Police said the accident happened when a can of WD-40 rolled under the brake pedal of a vehicle, making it impossible for the driver to stop at the intersection where it collided with another vehicle. Police cited the driver for disobeying a stop sign and driving in violation of restrictions.

Legendary Valley Center High School football coach Ernie Radford was honored during the season-opening home football game. His son, Ernest Radford II, and his grandson, Earnest David Radford III, tossed the coin to start the game. Radford coached the Hornets from 1937 to 1940, going 33-3-2 with an unbeaten season in 1940. He had replaced another Hornet legend, John Sward, who was appointed school district superintendent.
