Middle school tennis team falls to Andover Central, beats Derby North
By The News staff
Last Updated: September 06, 2018

The Valley Center Middle School tennis team split its first two dual meets, losing to Andover Central 13-6 on Aug. 28 but defeating Derby North 10-1 on Aug. 30.

Winning matches against Andover Central were Cheyenne Cicerello, Madison Ammerman, Madison Blanton, Lily Wilson, Sophia Gordon and Cambree Ricks. Winning players against Derby North were Emma Taylor, Rocky Lara, Ashley Isham, Tori Turner, Cicerello, Ammerman, Blanton and Wilson.

Other Hornet players who have participated in the duals, intersquad exhibition matches or the Purple-Gold Intrasquad Tourney include Hannah Clausel, Sarah Minaert, Reagan Lopez, Kelsey Sexton, Vanessa Sanders, Haylee Hill, Gabby Burkholder, Kyrie Claypool, Annalise Heilman, Adalyn Hoefgen, Shianne Jones, Makayla Milligan, Abigail Soellner, Mandy Wenzl and Phoenix West.

"We have 25 girls out this season, which is a pretty large squad," coach Kenny Carter said. "Twenty-three of our 25 players are first-year players, so we are pretty green and inexperienced. Coach Aeschliman and myself are really excited, though, about the potential and work ethic of our girls so far. There is some real potential talent in both grades this year if they are just willing to put in the hard work down the road. Emma Taylor and Rocky Lara are our two returners and have provided good leadership for our team this year. We also appreciate our three team managers who play middle school boys tennis — Colby Byers, Aiden Jones and Camdon Waterson. When we break into smaller practice groups, they really help Coach A and I by assisting with their assigned groups so that our girls can maximize the amount of hits we can get in each practice period."

The Hornets traveled to Andover Sept. 4 and will host Goddard on Sept. 6.
