Middle school splits football openers By The News staff Last Updated: September 06, 2018 The Valley Center Middle School football teams started their 2018 season with games against Andover. The seventh-grade and eighth-grade "A" teams hosted Andover. The seventh-graders won, while the eighth grade lost. Valley will host Goddard Sept. 6 and play at Maize South Sept. 13. Eighth grade — The eighth-grade Hornets fell to Andover 26-0. A scoreless first half ended with the Hornets threatening as time expired. Andover broke the stalemate with a one-yard touchdown run early in the second half. The visitors recovered an onside kick and added a touchdown on a seven-yard run. Andover tried another onside kick, but Valley Center recovered with good field position. An eight-yard gain on first down was negated with a fumble. Andover scored four plays later to take a 20-0 lead. Andover scored the game's final touchdown on a 65-yard run with 20 seconds left. "We got kind of shell-shocked," coach Trent Preheim said. "A couple of plays didn't go our way, and we didn't really respond very well. Not to take away from Andover, but we let them run away from us in the first four minutes of the second half. Credit to them for taking advantage of our miscues." Seventh grade — In a defensive battle, the seventh-grade Hornets came out on top. Valley Center's Travis Ruth recovered a fumble and sprinted 60 yards for the only score of the game and a 6-0 victory over Andover. Coach Mike Smith said Ruth, Kender Meyer, Eli Kieso, Rock Schomaker, Trace Emig and Hank Welu were the leading tacklers for Valley. Welu and Schomaker were the leading rushers for the offense, which racked up 160 yards on the ground. |
