Hornet JV tennis stumbles at Maize
By The News staff
Last Updated: August 23, 2018

The fall sports season is officially underway at Valley Center High School.

The Hornet junior varsity tennis team traveled Aug. 21 to Maize for a dual with the Eagles. Unfortunately the outcome wasn't favorable for the Hornets, as Maize defeated Valley Center 10-2.

"The results don't look that good but I was able to evaluate the girls' play and discuss changes after the match was over," coach Dean Schulz said. "Everyone was very receptive to the changes that need to be made, so I'm very encouraged that this group will get better as the season progresses."

Valley's only winners were sophomore Hailey McCartney at No. 5 singles and freshman Yolanda Lara at No. 7 singles. McCartney shut out Makenna Williams 6-0, while McCartney edged Addison Fiola 6-5 (7).

At No. 1 singles, freshman Amelia Farney lost 6-1 to Meredith Herter. At No. 2, freshman Abby Bui lost 6-0 to Isabell Elmore. At No. 3, freshman Aidaly Rascon lost 6-3 to Katie Morgan. At No. 4, senior Katelyn Babcock lost 6-1 to Halee Metts. At No. 6, freshman Alexandra Palmer lost 6-2 to Allyson Penn. At No. 8, freshman Jennifer Martinez lost 6-3 to Lexie Martinson.

At No. 1 doubles, Farney and Bui lost 6-1 to Herter/Elmore, at No. 2 Babcock and McCartney lost 6-2 to Morgan/Metts, at No. 3 Rascon and Palmer lost 5-6 (7) to Williams/Penn, and No. 4 Lara and Martinez lost 6-0 to Fiola/Martinson.
