From the library By Janice Sharp, director Last Updated: August 23, 2018 Support Friends by shopping Do you shop at Dillons? Do you shop at Leeker's? Do you shop on Amazon? Did you know that by shopping at these merchants, you can support the Friends of the Library? We received $60.60 in donations from Dillons for the second quarter of this year. If you do shop at Dillons, we were notified that our organization number has changed to FC716. We have 10 households that have designated the Friends for their charity of choice. Our last donation from Amazon was $24.81 for the second quarter as well. Amazon does not tell us how many families have designated the Friends on their purchases. Amazon pays one-half of one percent on purchases. Everyone in the community was upset when Leeker's closed its Valley Center store. If you shop the Park City store, purchase their Best Choice brand of foods, remove the bar code label and bring it to the library. When we have collected 1,000 labels, we can send them to Associated Grocers and receive a $30 check in return. We have already submitted several bundles this year. The checks from these organizations don't provide a lot of monies for the use of the Friends, but we feel it's a small way that the community can support the Friends that takes relatively small amounts of time. When staff makes purchases for the library, we search for bargains as well as everyone else. We're trying to purchase as much locally as possible. Our schools are beginning this week. Then a week or so later, we'll be celebrating Labor Day to honor all those who work daily to make our world function. We should all feel blessed. September will be library card sign-up month. If you don't have a card, why not come by and sign up for one? Where else can you get a book to read at no cost or rent a movie at no cost? Of course, the items must be returned on time but look at the bargain that is the library. We're here for the benefit of people in Valley Center and the surrounding areas. Libraries are not just about books — come check us out. Preschool story times will start Sept. 11 for children up to 2 years of age. The story times on Wednesday or Thursday will be for children of any age not yet in kindergarten. All story times are held from 10:30 to 11:00 a.m. No registration is required, and parents are included in the sessions. We have received more of our new shelves so we'll be bringing over more of our collection. We appreciate the patience of our patrons. When we have completed moving all of our collection, we're planning to have a garage/book sale at our old facility. We'll have bookshelves and miscellaneous furniture items to sell, as well as many donated books we're received in the last few months. Upcoming events Aug. 23 – First day of school Sept. 1&3 — Library closed for Labor Day Sept. 4 — City Council meeting Sept. 10 — Library Board meeting |
