Steve Huebert

Rep’s 10th term ahead
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: July 19, 2018

Steve Huebert won his primary election back in April.

That's when his wife, Marsha, gave her approval for him to run again.

“I got 100 percent of the vote," Huebert said.

Huebert, a Republican from Valley Center, is seeking his 10th term in the Kansas House of Representatives this fall, representing the 90th District.

He has no Republican challenger in the primary election, which is Aug. 7, nor any Democratic challenger in the general election.

So, if nothing odd happens, Huebert will become the second-most senior Republican in the House, starting his 20th year.

“We're not the norm," Huebert said. “In the Legislature, you don't need term limits. Term limits just happen through the election process."

Huebert was first elected in 2000. He had no challengers in his 2002, 2004, 2010 and 2014 re-election bids.

In 2016, he was challenged by Democrat Lou Cicirello, a city council member. Huebert won with a convincing 71 percent of the vote.

“Lou ran a good campaign, he worked hard and was an elected official," Huebert said. “… Northern Sedgwick County is a conservative, Republican area."

Huebert said despite no drama in the race this year, voters should be aware of other races, know the issues and get involved in the process.

“Be engaged," Huebert said. “… I believe you should know who represents you at every level."

Jene Vickery of Louisburg has Huebert beat by seven years. He's been serving in the Kansas House since 1993.

Huebert said he feels blessed to have the support of his wife all these years.

In other area House races, Republican Emil Bergquist of Park City does not have a primary challenger for District 91. Libertarian David Loomis of Wichita will challenge Bergquist in the general election.

In other primary election races that affect the area, Hugh Nicks will challenge incumbent Richard Ranzau for the Republican nod for the Fourth District seat of the Sedgwick County Commission, while Democrats Michael Kinard and Lacey Cruse will square off.
