A Wichita man was arrested May 16 after a chase and a short standoff with police in Valley Center.

About 4 p.m., Wichita police and the Kansas Highway Patrol pursued the suspect's vehicle into Valley Center on 69th North.

At Charles Street, which is between Interurban and Meridian, the driver got out of his vehicle and barricaded himself inside a nearby residential garage.

Authorities contained the suspect and were eventually able to talk him out of the garage. He was taken into custody, unarmed and without further incident.

The suspect was taken to a Wichita hospital to be checked for a medical condition.

According to Sedgwick County records, Kevin C. Payne, 47, was booked into jail on charges of theft, fleeing and eluding, driving with a suspended license, aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer, failure to comply and several traffic violations.

No one was hurt.
