Organizers hope the stars will align to make Valley Center High School's junior-senior prom one to remember.

The “Starry Night"-themed event will be April 28 at the school.

“I think prom is a big deal because it's one of your last big events in high school, and it's just something that maybe the seniors will remember once they go off to college," said junior Alyssa Turner, who is co-chair of the prom committee.

The prom will begin with the red carpet walk inside the auxiliary gym of the high school at 7:30 p.m. The dance will be from 8 to 11 p.m. After-Prom will start at 11:30 p.m.

Turner and co-chair Lizzie Pierce said the committee will be busy later this week setting up for the event.

“It's a fun time to get everyone together and work to come up with an idea and make it a really good prom for our junior and senior classes," Pierce said.

The planning process began with choosing a theme. After narrowing it to three, a student vote chose “Starry Night," based on the famous painting by Vincent van Gogh.

“The colors we picked were based off the painting — navy blue, yellow, black and purple," Turner said.

Lights will be strung from the balcony in the commons area to the wall.

“There will be tons of lights," Pierce said.

There also will be a large painting portraying van Gogh's “Starry Night."

Turner said the decoration process will begin three days before the event and will include a long work session on April 27.

“Even though it's a long process, it will be worth it," Turner said.

Pierce said prom represents a significant milestone for students, especially seniors.

“I think it's just exciting," she said.

Turner agreed.

“It brings the school together to one big function that a lot of people will be able to go to," she said.

Leading up to the event, the school celebrated spirit week with specifically themed days. Monday was vibrant color day, Tuesday mismatch day, Wednesday famous stars, Thursday class colors and Friday “make the night black" with students wearing black as a way to say goodbye to seniors.

Prom queen candidates are Emma Girtz, Chesney Lund and Cailey Scheppman. King candidates are Matthew Clark, Aaron Coash and Peyton Smith. King and queen will be crowned at 10 p.m.
