Emmie Boese is an intern at The Ark Valley News, which is in downtown Valley Center. Intern learns journalism By The News staff Last Updated: April 26, 2018 Emmie Boese thought she wanted to pursue a career in sports journalism. Now, she's sure she does. Boese, a Valley Center High School senior who has been a student intern at The Ark Valley News since August, was named intern of the month for March through the school's internship program. “Emmie has been a top candidate for intern of the month for quite some time, and I find her very deserving of the honor," said Cody Lee, post-secondary programs coordinator for the high school. “The time and commitment she has shown in her internship with evenings and weekends outside the school day has been impressive." Boese said she was honored to be chosen. “I would like to thank Mrs. Lee … for providing me with an opportunity to represent Valley Center High School in the internship program," Boese said. “I would also like to thank The Ark Valley News for allowing me to work with them. It has been such an awesome experience." Boese spends most of her time writing stories, covering high school soccer games, college signings and other school events. She also wrote a couple of columns. “Emmie never shies away from an assignment," said Chris Strunk, Ark Valley News publisher. “We've enjoyed having her be a part of our small team here at The News. It's been fun watching her grow into a student journalist." Boese said she most enjoys writing about sports, but likes other aspects of her internship. The internship has given Boese a chance to work on Main Street in a small town, giving her an inside view of the Valley Center community. “To be honest, I can't think of anything I don't enjoy about my internship," Boese said. “The people I work with are great." Boese plans to attend Butler Community College in the fall and pursue a degree in communications. Her internship helped her get a scholarship at Butler. “I think the internship program is one of the best programs the high school has to offer," Boese said. “It helps seniors explore their career interest, which is something I think has been helpful to me because it showed me what it takes to be a journalist and what the career for a journalist looks like. … It has helped me gain an even stronger interest in journalism." |
