Highlights Last Updated: March 15, 2018 Chase Johnson of Wichita was one of nearly 450 students at the University of Dallas students who were named to the fall 2017 semester dean's list for earning a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. He is majoring in philosophy and letters. ††† The Park City Senior Center, 6100 N. Hydraulic, will host a country dance from 7 to 10 p.m. March 17 featuring the Wildwood Band. Bonnie Furgason, Kay Tubach, Iris Worthington and Gary Miller will celebrate birthdays. Everyone is welcome. A $4 donation will be collected at the door. Refreshments will be served, and there will be door prizes. Bring a covered dish or snack to share. For more information or to help, call either Madison Shriner at 744-1199 or Aggie Dry at 744-0751. ††† K-State Research & Extension in Sedgwick County will host its Community Family Board Game Night, Bonding Thru Board Games, from 7 to 9 p.m. March 23. This research-based program designed to strengthen families' relationships thru board games will be held in the Sedgwick County Extension Sunflower Room at 7001 W. 21st North. All ages are welcome at this free come-and-go event. ††† Registration is now open for the 29th annual Sunflower State Games, July 13 through 29 in Topeka. The multisport festival will feature a record 50 different events for all ages and skill levels. New sports this year include boxing, Dodgeball, Muzzleloading, Ultimate and Weightlifting. Complete event details and registration procedures can be found online at sunflowergames.com. The Cauldron Fest will kick off the Games on July 14 at Lake Shawnee. The annual lighting of the cauldron will take place at 7:45 a.m., with a 5K/10K run set to take off at 8 a.m. Organizers are also looking for volunteers to assist with various duties for the duration of the games. Approximately 700 volunteers will be utilized in supporting roles. Additional volunteer information can be found at sunflowergames.com. Last year, the event hosted 7,222 participants from 397 communities. In 2018, organizers hope to host more than 7,000 athletes for the 10th consecutive year. The Sunflower State Games is a nonprofit organization based in Topeka. The Games are held annually in July and its purpose is to promote physical fitness and an active lifestyle for all Kansans through participation in sports. |
