DECA students qualify for international conference

Valley Center High School DECA members participated in a state competition March 4 through 6 in Overland Park.

Valley Center finished in the Top 10 in 16 of the 24 events. Eight were top-three finishers.

Several members qualified for the international conference in Atlanta, Ga., in April. They were Mariah Behrns, Derek Dunn, Kaeli Gard, Sydney Martens, Lucas Mathewson, Tristan Mitzel and Katherine Thomas.

Grand Award medalists were Behrns (first in Independent Business Plan and seventh in Human Resources Management), Martens (first in Business Growth Plan), Dunn (second in Hospitality and Tourism Professional Selling and third in Hotel and Lodging Management), Mathewson and Mitzel (second in Financial Literacy Promotion Project and eighth in Restaurant and Food Service Management), Gard (third in Hospitality and Tourism Professional Selling), Thomas (third in Innovation Plan and third in Entrepreneurship), Derek Foster (fourth in Financial Consulting), Mathewson (sixth in Automotive Services Marketing), Jace Crass (sixth in Professional Selling), Caleb Carter (sixth in Financial Consulting), Chase LaMastres (eight in Personal Financial Literacy) and Danielle Somers (10th in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism).

Top 3 Role Play winners were Mitzel (Yellow Role Play first place in Restaurant and Food Service Management) and Dunn (Red Role Play third place in hotel and Lodging Management).

Top 10 exam winners were Carter (second place in Personal Financial Literacy Exam), LaMastres (fourth place in Personal Financial Literacy Exam), Gard (sixth place in Hospitality and Tourism Cluster Exam) and Mitzel (eighth place in Hospitality and Tourism Cluster Exam).

Top 10 Role Play winners were Crass in Principles of Business Management and Administration, Somers in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism, Trevor Reed in Principles of Marketing, Martens in Apparel and Accessories Marketing, Mathewson in Automotive Services Marketing, Thomas in Entrepreneurship Series, Behrns in Human Resources Management and Chase LaMastres in Personal Financial Literacy.
