Looking Back Last Updated: March 15, 2018 55 years ago The Valley Center Hornets defeated Medicine Lodge, the top-ranked team in the state, by one point in the final game of the Class A Regional Tournament. The win enabled the Hornets to participate in the Class A State Tournament at Hutchinson for the second consecutive year. A $100,000 drag strip was planned southwest of Valley Center, located one mile north of K-96 Highway on Ridge Road and one-half mile west. The strip was the first of its kind in Sedgwick County. It was to be built and operated by Midwest Drag Race Inc. Principals involved were Arthur Nelson, Harley Miles and Glenn Terry, all of Valley Center. 45 years ago Sgt. Gayland D. Hackney, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Hackney of Valley Center, arrived for duty at Udorn Royal Thai Air Force Base, Thailand. A law enforcement specialist, Hackney was assigned to a unit of the Pacific Air Forces that provided tactical air power in support of the U.S. and its allies in Southeast Asia and the Far East. He previously served at Bien Hoa Air Base, Vietnam. Hackney was a 1966 graduate of Valley Center High School and was married to the former Paulette S. Benson. Mrs. Earl Stauffer announced plans for the annual Stunt Night at the junior high school. Members of the Progressive Women's Club would supply homemade candy to be sold during the event. 40 years ago Calvary Baptist Church Pastor Herald Henderson announced that the church would begin an expansion project. A Together We Build banquet was held, and personal commitments were revealed. The amount needed to proceed with the construction had already been raised as of the banquet. After three years, Roger Maris resigned as head football coach at Valley Center High School. High school principal Gerald Henderson expressed his faith in Maris as both a person and a teacher. Maris would stay on as a business teacher and assistant basketball coach at the high school. 35 years ago The Valley Center City Council approved the addition of two 102,000-bushel concrete storage bins at the south end of the Valley Center Farmers Elevator on South Ash. The decision was made after a huge grain pile was formed last fall because the area milo harvest arrived sooner than expected. Elevator manager Randy Riley said they did not want that to happen again. The expansion was estimated at more than $300,000. Lance Cpl. Kurt Ashpole, son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Ashpole of Valley Center, was serving on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Ranger, home based in San Diego. He was part of a six-member Marine escort party for Queen Elizabeth when she toured the ship. 30 years ago Ginger Cauble, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cauble, was awarded a Bethany College president's scholarship. Renewable for four years, the scholarship was worth $2,500 each year and was based on outstanding academic credentials. Cauble, a Valley Center High School senior, was active in drill team, Bible Club, student council, church youth council, tennis, band and debate. She was a Kansas honor scholar and was a member of National Honor Society. She also won an English creative writing award. Tod Myers, son of Jean Myers, qualified to compete at the National Career Development Conference in Salt Lake City. Myers, a student at Butler County Community College, placed fifth in general marketing at the state contest. 25 years ago Cindy Nordstedt, daughter of Larry and Jeannine Nordstedt of Valley Center, was a student teacher with the Sterling public school system. She was a senior at Sterling College. Jeff Hubbard, a Valley Center Jaycee, was soliciting pledges for his first-ever parachute jump as part of a fundraiser for the Kansas Jaycee Cerebral Palsy Ranch near Augusta. His jump was part of the Hutchinson Jaycees' sky dive to benefit the ranch. The goal was $10,000; his goal was to make the jump. 20 years ago About half of the roof at Valley View Apartments was ripped off as a result of wind damage. Brandy Cammarn, the manager of the apartments, said Fisher Roofing began preliminary repair work. Some residents thought a tornado had torn the roof off, with wind speeds of nearly 50 mph. Several Valley Center students participated in the Wichita State University presentation "The Lord of the Rings" at the Kansas Music Educators Association. Christina Gregory and Melissa Lampe Stockwell were cast members. Angela Arehart played alto saxophone, and Nicolas Gemas played tuba in the WSU symphonic band. 15 years ago Megan Clark, daughter of Mark and Stacy Clark of Valley Center, was to travel with the Sterling College concert choir on its spring tour visiting cities in western Kansas and several sites in Colorado. Clark was a freshman at Sterling. Chris Moon, son of Howard and Jane Moon, was a reporter with the Topeka Capital-Journal covering the state legislature. Moon was a Valley Center High School graduate. 10 years ago The Valley Center High School chess team captured the Class 5A state title for the second straight year. Sean Snavely placed 21st, Brian Turley was 48th and Brian Simpson finished 56th. Megan Courtois, daughter of Leo and Francie Courtois, signed a letter of intent to play softball at Garden City Community College. Garden City assistant coach Trina Moquett coached Courtois during a North American Fastpitch Association Softball Showcase in Salina last summer and liked what she saw. 5 years ago Ron Barry, history teacher and assistant football coach at Valley Center High School, was named the school's assistant principal and activities and athletics director. A teacher in the district for five years, Barry had been the assistant football coach at the high school since 2008. He also coached middle school girls basketball since 2009. Three Valley Center High School boys basketball players received post-season league awards. Senior Braden Tormey was named to the second team All-Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II, while sophomore Blake Crager and senior Garrett Reeves received honorable mention. |
