Valley places 5th at Rocky Welton Invitational By Jeremiah Strunk Last Updated: February 01, 2018 The Valley Center High School wrestling team placed fifth at the Rocky Welton Invitational in Garden City Jan. 26 and 27. The Hornets competed against 37 teams from Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska and New Mexico. The Hornets placed five of their 10 wrestlers in the top six, including Devin Gomez (138), Dallas Boone (145), Chase Ramirez (160), Tyler Boone (170), and Tony Caldwell (285). Valley had only 10 wrestlers at the invitational, missing entries at 120, 152, 182 and 195 pounds. It was an uphill battle for the Hornets. With a small lineup, the Hornets knew they had to cheer each other on. Gomez recalled getting Dallas Boone ready for his finals match. "I looked at him and said, ‘Just go out there and do what you know how to do. I love you,' " Gomez said. Gomez placed fifth against state finalists from Nebraska and Colorado. Gomez wrestled into the semifinals, where he lost two consecutive rounds, but then redeemed himself with a pin. Dallas Boone wrestled at 145 pounds and was the lone Hornet to make the finals. Boone fell to Hoxie's top wrestler by decision, 8-3, placing second. "I felt really good, and just to get into the finals meant so much for our team," Boone said. Wrestling at 160 pounds, Ramirez placed fourth place after fighting his way into the consolation semis. Ramirez's third-place match ended with a 2-1 loss. Tyler Boone wrestled at 170 pounds for the Hornets, placing third. After Boone was pinned in his quarterfinal match, he gained redemption after battling back in the consolation rounds to a third-place match. Boone pinned his opponent. The last wrestler to place for the Hornets was Caldwell at 285 pounds. Caldwell fell into the consolation bracket after a loss to a wrestler from Kearney, Neb. He was pinned in the fifth-place match to finish sixth. "The whole team really wrestled their hardest," Dallas Boone said. "And after our matches, there is a lot of team bonding, which is always great." The Hornets will return to dual at Goddard Feb. 1 and at Andover Feb. 8. In between is a Feb. 2 and 3 tournament in Rose Hill.
