Last Updated: January 11, 2018

Longtime Valley Center High School science teacher Riley Greenwood has died.

Greenwood, who taught in the school district for more than three decades, died at his home on Ora Court in the Valley Meadows neighborhood in Valley Center.

Ambulance and fire crews responded to the home when a family member called 911 to report a possible stroke about 2:30 p.m.

Police Chief Lloyd Newman said Greenwood was pronounced dead at the home. No foul play is suspected, he said.

The school district notified parents through automated phone and email systems.

The following was the district's email to parents:

"We are deeply saddened to inform you that Valley Center High School Science teacher, Riley Greenwood suffered an unexpected health incident this afternoon in his home and despite efforts of emergency medical personnel, passed away. Mr. Greenwood has been with the district 33 years and served in many teaching, coaching, and sponsor capacities. We know he positively impacted the lives of countless students and staff."

The district advised parents to talk to their children about death and said that counseling services would be available for staff and students at the high school during school hours.

"Our deepest sympathies go to Riley's family, friends, colleagues and students," the district said.
