The average price for a gallon of gas in the Wichita area fell 2.5 cents during the past week, averaging $2.17 on Dec. 17. The national average fell 3.3 cents to $2.41, according to GasBuddy.com. Gas prices were 14.9 cents higher than the same day last year and 21.4 cents lower than a month ago. … The American Red Cross will host blood drives in the area as part of its Battle of the Badges campaign. There will be one from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 6 at Bel Aire City Hall, 7651 E. Central Park; from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 23 at Park City Leeker's, 6223 N. Call 800-733-2767 for an appointment. … The Ark Valley News office will close at noon Dec. 22 and will re-open at 8 a.m. Dec. 26. … A woman was taken to the hospital with a medical condition Dec. 19 after her grandson alerted adults that she needed help. Valley Center police Chief Lloyd Newman said the woman was driving her grandson to the middle school when she suffered a medical problem. The boy called his mother and said they were near Kwik Shop. A Valley Center police officer found the vehicle stopped on Fifth near Ash and alerted EMS. The grandmother was apparently unconscious.
