Hornets win Maize South dual, place second at Carroll
By Jeremiah Strunk
Last Updated: December 28, 2017

After winning its home dual against Maize South in convincing fashion Dec. 14, the Valley Center High School wrestling team placed second at the Bishop Carroll Invitational Dec. 16, finishing the 2017 portion of its schedule.

At the home dual against Maize South, the Hornets had no trouble producing pin after pin, which eventually led to their 60-20 team victory. The Hornets recorded nine pins in 13 weight classes.

The 40-point victory wasn't the only positive experience for Valley that day. The Hornets also saw a lot of new faces wrestling for varsity, including Jayden Sears (120 pounds), Quentin Kirk (132), Devin Delforge (138), Quentin Collins (145), Carson Kraus (170) and Andy Alonzo (195).

“I was really excited for tonight because we put a lot of new faces on the varsity mat," said head coach Tate Lowe. “We were able to plug in some JV kids and get them some experience."

With the win against Maize South under their belt, the Hornets were ready to compete at Bishop Carroll. The Hornets trailed Newton by 8.5 team points in the final standings.

While second place at an invitational with 5A and 6A teams may seem impressive, varsity wrestler Mike Turkali described it as “bittersweet" and realized that the Hornets have work to do during the winter break.

Lowe agreed.

“The second place leaves a bitter taste in our mouths," said Lowe. “If some of our kids didn't make those mental mistakes, we would have won the tournament.

The Hornets had three wrestlers who took first in their weight class, including Turkali (126), Devin Gomez (138) and Tyler Boone (170).

Turkali redeemed himself from the Maize South dual during his last match at Bishop Carroll. Turkali had lost to Jayson West by decision during the Maize South dual, but came back and beat him 7-1 during his first-place match.

“I just went out there and dominated this time," said Turkali.

Gomez was able to show off his strengths during his first-place match, beating Flores from Wichita South by decision. After a takedown late in the second period, Gomez escaped and dominated the rest of the round. Gomez won a 4-2 decision.

“It was a good feeling, looking up at the stands and seeing all the support I had and looking down at my team," Gomez said.

Boone's first-place match was against Williams from Washburn Rural. Boone's match was a close call after Williams was able to tie it up at 6-6 with 30 seconds remaining. But with quick-thinking, Boone was able to get the last-second escape he needed to win the round and take home the gold.

The Hornets are off until a home dual against Andover Central Jan. 4.
