Kechi police adding new weapons By Taylor Messick Last Updated: December 28, 2017 During its final meeting of the year Dec. 14, the Kechi City Council unanimously approved the purchase of new weapons for the city's police department. Kechi can have up to two officers on duty at once and the department has been sharing its lone rifle in case of emergencies. Officers carry handguns and vehicles are equipped with shotguns. Now, the department will also have rifles in both of its patrol vehicles. The department is lucky enough to not have encountered a situation where an officer needed a rifle and didn't have one. “The two new rifles will allow an upgrade for the department," said Chief John Blevins. “We have one Bushmaster .223 semi automatic rifle that I want to trade in for the other two." Blevins sought three bids for two Windham .223 semi-automatic rifles. The best bid came from GT Distributors, which offered a $330 trade-in for the Bushmaster. Including the trade-in price, the department will get the two Windham rifles for $1,109.06. For those rifles, the department will also purchase two Aimpoint Patrol rifle sights. The scopes will also be purchase through GT Distributors and will cost a total of $870. “Obviously, we'll go get certified on the range," said Blevins. “We'll do that both with and without scopes to prepare for different scenarios." In other business, the council: •Heard a presentation from Mark Chamberlin of Armstrong Chamberlin about the city's branding and marketing plan. Council and staff gave input and selected a new city logo. •Unanimously approved technology upgrades and replacements. •Unanimously voted to discontinue the Homeowner's Incentive Program. •Unanimously voted to issue taxable industrial revenue bonds to Cillessen Properties LLC. •Unanimously approved KDOT North 2nd addition plat. |
