From the library By Janice Sharp, director Last Updated: November 16, 2017 We have a lot going on during holidays We'll be observing Thanksgiving next week. We all have so much to be thankful for and should observe thanksgiving every day, not just for one day a year. If we each made a list, I'm sure it would be very lengthy. Enjoy your turkey on Thanksgiving but remember to be thankful for what you have been given. The library will be closed Nov. 23 through 25 to allow staff to observe Thanksgiving day and the weekend with family and friends. There will be no story times as well. The Friends of the Library will meet for their monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 27. We encourage everyone who donated to the Building Fund to attend, if possible. We will be discussing the businesses in the community that have not participated in the fundraising. Invoices will be going out next week for the remaining unpaid pledges. We are hoping to have all pledges paid by the end of December. We have about $16,000 remaining unpaid at this time. We are still fundraising for the shelving, furniture and other needs for the new library. Every donation is greatly appreciated and tax deductible. Join other members of the community at 7 p.m. Nov. 28 at Valley Center High School for a Pie Bake-Off. Local organizations have challenged each other to make the “best" pie. McCurdy Auctioneers will be on hand to sell the pies to the highest bidders. There will be extra pies for sampling prior to the auction. The event is benefiting the Valley Center Community Foundation. The adult reading challenge will officially end Nov. 30. Readers were challenged to read books with “Fall" in the title or in the author's name. Individuals were to read a minimum of six books. Those who turned in their logs will be able to choose an item from our prize basket. We'll start a new reading challenge after the first of the year. Plan to shop at our Hometown Holidays on Dec. 2. Watch for more information coming from the Chamber and other organizations. Christmas will be here soon. We should all think about area children whose parents cannot provide them with a basic Christmas. Valley Center CARES for Kids is a local charity that provides community assistance, resources and emergency services to families in need in the Valley Center school district. They are planning to serve between 50 and 75 families this year through the Christmas Kids project. If you can donate, contact Nancy Dugan at 655-0657 or email her at Nancy@DGWichitalaw.com. To adopt a family, contact Natalie Horton at 755-7060 or Natalie.Horton@usd262.net. Donations may be sent to Valley Center CARES for Kids, c/o VCMS, 800 N. Meridian, Valley Center KS 67147.
