Valley Center High School senior Colten Richardson signed a letter of intent Nov. 14 to play baseball at Southwestern College in Winfield.

“It's a nice weight off my shoulders knowing I've already signed going into this season," said Richardson. “I can go into the season without having to worry about anything and I can just have fun."

Southwestern College restarted its varsity baseball program this year.

Richardson talked about why the program was a good fit for him.

“It's nice and small and that's something I look forward to," he said. “There are a good group of kids already there, and I'm looking forward to joining them. It wasn't really my decision whether or not to stay so close to home. It was more my mom's. I've got to stay close to her; I need someone to do my laundry."

Valley Center baseball coach Nick Barnes said Richardson deserves this chance. He spoke highly of his catcher and was happy for his achievement.

“He's started every year for us," said Barnes. “He has a really good skill set behind the dish. He loves to play baseball and any time he's between the lines, he's there to beat up on the opposing team. He's got a bright future and a lot of upside. I'm happy he got this opportunity and I think Southwestern is a good fit for him."

Southwestern's head coach, Kevin Frady, also spoke highly of Richardson.

“I like the intensity he plays with," said Frady. “He's probably undersized every time he steps out onto the field, but he plays with great passion and a chip on his shoulder. Having spent five years with Coach Price at the University of Kansas, one thing I've learned is you take chances with overachievers because they pay off in the long run. I think he's got his best baseball ahead of him."
