HORNET FOOTBALL:
Valley Center 4-0

By Ray Strunk
Last Updated: September 28, 2017

A late 82-yard touchdown run from junior running back Larry Wilson lifted Valley Center to a 21-15 victory over Newton on Friday night. The Hornets move to 4-0 on the season.

Junior quarterback Parker Schrater lined the offense up at the Valley Center 18 with less than a minute on the clock and the score knotted at 15-15.

Schrater handed the ball off to Wilson for a run up the middle.

Head Coach Caleb Smith was already looking ahead to overtime.

“I was just trying to run down the clock," Smith said.

The offense had something different in mind. The line opened up a hole in the middle and Wilson broke free, taking the ball 82 yards into the endzone.

“I just ran up the middle, saw the open lane — a guy tried to chase me down and I just ran from him and scored," Wilson said.

Wilson finished with 198 yards on 30 attempts.

Aaron Coash's extra point attempt was blocked, bringing the score to 21-15.

The Hornet defense held Newton for the final 17 seconds.

Coash finished with three field goals and one extra point.

Valley Center plays Hays next week at home.
