VCMS tennis improving as season rolls on
By The News staff
Last Updated: September 14, 2017

The Valley Center Middle School girls' tennis team competed in four duals since the season started Aug. 31.

The latest was a home match against Winfield Sept. 11.

“This was the best girls' team Winfield has put together in several years," said coach Kenny Carter. “They had some very good top players and nine of their 13 girls were second-year players. Our girls actually played well and had many close games."

Amelia Farney and Trista Johnson won a tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles to highlight the Hornet outing. Also winning matches were Rocky Lara and Aidaly Rascon at doubles and Rascon and Yolanda Lara at singles.

In a road match against Maize South Sept. 7, the Hornets won more matches than at the previous two duals this season. Maddie Hamm and Eris Bishop won No. 1 doubles and Hamm also won at No. 2 singles. Other winners included Aidaly Rascon, Rocky Lara and Abby Bui.

“Maddie and Eris' win at doubles was a really good win against a really tough team," Carter said. “This is their second year together as doubles partners and they do a great job of working together and covering the court."

The most improved player among the 13 beginners for the Hornets so far this year is seventh-grader Raquel “Rocky" Lara, who has now moved up to fifth on the team ladder.

The Hornets host Goddard Sept. 14 and play at the Maize South Invitational Sept. 19.

The Hornets opened the season Aug. 31 at McPherson. The best two performances included Abby Bui, who won her singles match, and Maddie Hamm and Eris Bishop, who lost a tiebreaker match 9-7 in No. 1 doubles.

The Hornets competed against Goddard Eisenhower at home Sept. 5. Winners included Chloe Peterson in singles and Alex Palmer and Peterson in doubles.

“We have a great group of girls this year," Carter said. “Unfortunately, we only have four girls with experience from last year and the first three or four duals feature squads with many more returning players. Thirteen of our 17 girls have never played before but are improving daily. If they continue to work hard, they will eventually catch up. Right now our goals involve personal improvement and maintaining a positive attitude."

Team members include:  Maddie Hamm, Eris Bishop, Amelia Farney, Trista Johnson, Grace Brabander, Aidaly Rascon, Emma Taylor, Chloe Peterson, Raquel Lara, Alex Palmer, Taylor Ammerman, Yolanda Lara, Jennifer Martinez, Abby Bui, Abbie Miller, Loarelai Hellon and Taylor Frye. Carter is assisted by Dillon Jackson.
