Middle school cross country team getting faster
By The News staff
Last Updated: September 14, 2017

The Valley Center Middle School cross country team hosted an 11-team meet Sept. 5 at Valley Point Golf Course and competed at Wellington's Hargis Creek Sept. 9.

“Super proud of the team's overall effort at Wellington," said Valley Center coach Lee Owens.

Twenty-seven of the 38 Hornet runners decreased their times between the first meet and the second.

“It holds true in cross country that the most improvement you see is from race one to race two," Owens said.

At home, the eighth-grade girls placed ninth, the eighth-grade boys eighth, the seventh-grade boys ninth, and the seventh-grade girls fourth.

At Wellington, the seventh-grade girls moved up a spot to place third, while the other three teams were ninth.

Eighth boys — Lejer McDaniel led the Hornets at home with 24th place, followed by Noah Schrag and Garrett Fitch. Maize South won the race, while Eisenhower was second and Andover Central third.

At Hargis Creek, McDaniel was 20th, Schrag 24th and Chandler Thurman 33rd. Augusta won the race.

Eighth girls — Kylie Crum placed 10th to lead the Hornets at home. Lauren Clark and Jadyn Winters rounded out the Hornets' point scorers. Maize South won the race, while Derby North was second and Maize third.

At Hargis Creek, Crum placed eighth, Clark 41st and Anna Bogue 46th. Augusta won the meet.

Seventh boys — Mason Ehrstein had Valley's best time, placing 18th at the home meet. Joshua Hailey and Bryce Jones were the other top placers for the Hornets. Andover won the race, followed by Maize and Newton.

At Hargis Creek, Hailey placed 18th, Ehrsten 20th and Jack McDonald 40th. Andover won the team standings.

Seventh girls — Valley had two runners finish in the top 10 at home and was just two points behind the third-place finishing team. Kelsie Kinniburgh placed fourth, while Addie Fitch was eighth. Tori Turner had the Hornets other points. Maize won the race, followed by Goddard and Andover.

At Hargis Creek, Kinniburgh was 10th, Fitch 12th and Rylin Ramsay 15th. Maize won the race, followed by Andover.

Valley Center competed at Lake Afton Sept. 12 and will compete in the Derby Invitational at High Park Sept. 18.
