Hornet golfers struggle at Sand Creek
By Taylor Messick
Last Updated: September 14, 2017

The Valley Center High School girls' golf team hosted a tournament at Newton's Sand Creek Station on Sept. 12. The Hornets finished 12th out of 13 teams without a full team.

“The Lady Hornets improved by eight shots as a team even though the team was shorthanded due to illness and injury," said coach Mike McCormick. “They only played with four golfers, leaving no room for error as all four scores had to count for the team competition."

Mati Newman was the girls' top performer. She took 17th by shooting a 44. Newman just missed a medal and McCormick said she showed a lot of improvement with her short game.

Edie Reese shot a 55 and struggled a bit off the tee. Lizzy Pierce shot a 66 and Elana Schmelzle shot a 60.

“Elana drove the ball really well, but we need to work on her approach shots," said McCormick. “She's coming along great considering she never touched a club until a few short weeks ago."

The JV girls played at Sierra Hills on Sept. 12. Alyssa Turner and Abbi Wolf shot 50 each. Kaci Kipp shot a 58 and Mallory Fiebich shot a 68.

Next, varsity plays Crestview Country Club on Sept. 18. JV plays in Salina on Sept. 14.
