The sign says “coming soon," but it may be a month or more, the owner says.

Donut shop to open at 5th, Meridian

A small white sign on an empty building is creating some buzz in Valley Center.

The “Donuts Coming Soon!" sign above the door of the former Jerry's Tex-Mex restaurant at Fifth and Meridian has some anticipating a welcome addition to the city's dining fare.

The News learned this week that the property was purchased by Sophannarath “Pon" Toeur, who plans to remodel the building and open a Daylight Donuts-franchised shop in the next month or so.

Toeur, who has owned and operated a similar donut shop in the 1700 block of North Main in Newton for more than a year, told The News that the opening date depends on when the contractor can finish the remodel and when kitchen equipment will become available.

Toeur said he plans to sell breakfast and lunch as well as donuts.

“Same as what we have in Newton," he said.

The property, which includes a separate row of storage units, had been owned by Daniel Vanderbom since 2007.

Vanderbom said the storage units have done well, but the track record for restaurants has not been as successful.

When the donut shop opens, it will be the third food-related business in the building during the past five years (and fifth since it was a gas station).

Tucker's BBQ opened in 2012 and operated for nearly two years.

The building sat empty for more than a year before Jerry's Tex-Mex Grill opened in February 2016. Jerry's closed this summer.

The former gas station was previously the home of the Hornets Nest Eatery and Burger Hut.
