Middle school Hornets win one against Hutchinson
By The News staff
Last Updated: September 07, 2017

Valley Center Middle School volleyball was able to win but one match Aug. 31 when it hosted Hutchinson. The eighth-grade “B" team was the only group of Hornets to post a “W" on the night.

For the young season, the seventh-grade “B" team is 0-2, while the other three squads are 1-1.

The Hornets return to action Sept. 7 at Salina Lakewood.

Eighth grade — The “A" team (now 1-1) played it close in the first game but couldn't keep up, as Hutchinson won 21-25 and 10-25.

“We couldn't find a spark tonight," coach Kyrie Edwards said. “Hutch played well and did all of the right things, while we just fell apart. Abigail DeBaun had some great digs, but everything else fell short."

Valley's “B" team returned the favor by sweeping the Salthawks 25-21, 25-15 for its first win of the season.

“(The) … girls stepped it up a notch with a win against Hutch," said coach JoAnn Owens. “The girls were a lot more confident in their positions."

Alaina Waters and Sammie Swindle put together serving streaks to power the Hornets in the second game.

“Making our serves allowed us to play our game," said Ella Wiechman.

Seventh grade — The “A" team went three sets but fell to Hutchinson 19-25, 25-19, 10-15.

“We made a lot of mental mistakes tonight. We were in the net, out of rotation and those sorts of things," coach Melissa Fehrenbach said. “But our middles, Dylan Cochran and Savinnah Bretton had … their first blocks of the season. Emma Bond was unshakeable and lethal from the service line."

Valley's “B" team never got it going in a 14-25, 8-25 loss.

“We were hoping for a closer match tonight but, unfortunately, kept getting caught in transition," Owens said. “Although we didn't win, Jaylee Adams had some strong serves, and Grace Orr really stepped up as a team leader."
