By The News staff
Last Updated: September 07, 2017

The Valley Center Middle School football teams opened the season at home against Maize South Aug. 31.

The seventh-graders won, while the eighth-grade team lost.

The Hornets will host Andover Central Sept. 7 and Goddard Eisenhower Sept. 14.

Eighth grade — Maize South capitalized on big plays to take control of the game in the first quarter, handing Valley Center a 34-0 loss.

The Mavericks led 20-0 after the first quarter and 28-0 at halftime.

Coach Trent Preheim said the Hornets continued to play hard and compete, but just couldn't dig out of the hole.

Seventh grade — The Hornets, coached by Mike Smith, beat Maize South 14-0.

After a scoreless first quarter, Valley Center got on the board with a 25-yard touchdown run by Nolan Bevan, giving the Hornets a 6-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Cameron Bowyer scored on a 34-yard run. Easton Boone completed the two-point conversion pass to Bowyer for the final score.

Smith said Boone, Bowyer and Jacob Rutschman led the team in rushing behind the blocking of Cesar Morales and Avery Morand.

In the shutout, Bowyer and Bevan were the leading tacklers, while Caden Lampe and Morales were the leaders on the defensive line, Smith said.
