Holding line on taxes is welcome
Last Updated: August 25, 2017

Nice job.

The Valley Center school board and the Valley Center City Council deserve a pat on the back this week for approving operating budgets that don't include tax increases. In fact, if you're keeping score, your overall property tax mill levy will decrease if you own property in the city or in the school district.

The city property tax supporting the 2018 budget is expected to drop from 55.640 mills to 55.589. The school district property tax is expected to drop from 60.782 mills to 60.282.

It may not make much of a difference in a property owner's overall tax bill next year, depending on what happens to property values, but it makes sense for governments to operate the way these two have.

Both groups benefited from an overall increase in property valuation, which will make a mill of property taxes worth more next year.

More importantly, both the school district and the city are able to maintain and even grow some services. The school district hired more teachers and staff. The city has earmarked funds for additional firefighters as well as equipment, infrastructure and even amenities in other areas.

That's how governments should work.

We applaud their efforts and are mindful of what a blessing it is to live in a growing community.
