Bookkeepers charged with theft By Chris Strunk Last Updated: August 25, 2017 A couple of former bookkeepers are facing felony theft and computer fraud charges for allegedly embezzling thousands of dollars from two separate Valley Center businesses over the past couple of years. Det. Michael Gordon said Tracy Ann Whiting, 39, of Valley Center was charged Aug. 10 in Sedgwick County District Court with two counts of felony theft, two counts of criminal use of a financial card, identity theft and computer fraud. Whiting, a former bookkeeper and accounts payable clerk for Arick-Hughes Inc., is accused of writing checks to herself, using company credit cards for personal use and securing a credit card using a co-worker's name. She is accused of taking a little more than $40,000 from the company over about a two-year period. The suspected embezzlement was reported to police in March. Meanwhile, a former bookkeeper at Bryan's Heating & Air Conditioning was charged with computer fraud and two counts of felony theft. Candance Lain, 49, of Sedgwick is accused of pocketing just under $17,000 in cash and charging about $2,500 on a gas card without permission over a two-year period. Police said Lain was allegedly covering up the thefts on a computer-based accounting program. The suspected embezzlement was reported to police in April. |
