Standard high for Hornet cross country By The News staff Last Updated: August 25, 2017 The Valley Center High School girls' cross-country team has some big running shoes to fill this season. After a second-place finish in a Class 5A regional meet and seventh at state last year, the Hornets return a core of runners who could vie for postseason success. Among the Hornets' top returners is senior Karli Elsner. She placed 65th at state last year. Junior Holly Smith also returns for the Hornets. Smith placed 38th at state. Sophomore Riley Ranzau will help the Hornet cause. Part of the state team, she was 39th overall and had the 10th-best time for a freshman. Senior Sydney Martens was 66th at state. Valley was third at the always tough Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League II meet. There are 17 runners out for the girls' team. The boys will be led by Derek Barton, Brent Aamodt, Kyle Stamm, Parker Francis and Diego Chavez. There are 15 runners out for the boys' team. The Hornets are coached by Amber Russell, who is in her second year as head coach, and Colton Durham, a Valley Center High School graduate and former cross country standout who is starting his first year as assistant coach. Valley Center will begin the season by hosting an invitational Sept. 5 at Valley Point Golf Course. After that, the Hornets will travel to Hargis Creek Sept. 9, Prairie Hills Sept. 14, Lake Afton Sept. 21 and Newton's Centennial Park Sept. 30. After a meet at Wichita Trinity, the league meet will be Oct. 14 in Hutchinson. |
