From the library

Check for unreturned library materials

Are you planning to attend the Aug. 14 Family Hot Dog Cookout to learn about the eclipse and the solar system? If you are, you will need to RSVP by telephone to the library by noon Aug. 12. If you are unable to come for food, please come at 8 p.m. for the program presented by the Cosmosphere. They will share information about the eclipse, then prepare for stargazing at dark.

The last solar eclipse was in February 1979, and the next one will not be until June 2021, based upon an Internet site listing eclipses for the next 10 years. Be sure to bring your lawn chairs for the evening's events.

The library received a grant to provide the necessary glasses for viewing the eclipse. One of the requirements of the grant was that the glasses were to be handed out at a program. Anyone attending the Aug. 14 or Aug. 21 events will be provided glasses.

We will have activities from 11:30 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. Aug. 21, the actual day of the eclipse. We will have games and crafts for the kids and adults, if they wish to participate. Please bring your lawn chairs so we can all sit outside to view the progress of the eclipse. We are expected to have 93 percent coverage at the peak around 1:05 p.m. No reservations are required for Aug. 21.

The adult summer reading challenge will end Aug. 31. The challenge is to read books with the beginning letter of the title or author (first or last name) to coincide with the letters of Build A Better World. A minimum of six books should be listed on the logs. We have had several patrons read completely through the letters at least twice.

School will be starting Aug. 17. It's time to bring out the book bags again to put in the paper, pencils and other required materials for the upcoming school year.

Check the book bags for any unreturned library materials that were hidden in the closets during the summer. We do charge for the replacement of long overdue materials on the patron accounts when the materials are nine weeks overdue. Patrons who have designated notification by email receive several messages during the nine weeks reminding them of the overdue materials. Once a material has been replaced, we cannot accept it back for the collection. Fines are much cheaper to pay than replacement fees, and we work with our patrons in an effort to pay monies due.

The Friends of the Library is still working to raise money to complete our goals for the new community facility. We're hoping to match the last $50,000 challenge. Any money that exceeds the goal will be used to pay for new library fixtures and furniture. Be sure to drive past Lions Park to check the progress. It may not be long before we see the actual construction beginning.

Anyone who pledged $1,000 or more has automatically become a Friend of the Library. We are now having monthly meetings for the Friends on the fourth Tuesday of each month. The August meeting, however, has been moved to the fifth Tuesday due to the rescheduling of the Library Board meeting to Aug. 22. The meetings begin at 6 p.m., and everyone is welcome to attend.
