District expands soccer, track coaching staffs
By Chris Strunk
Last Updated: August 10, 2017

Help is on the way for Steen Danielsen and Troy Emig.

The Valley Center school board Aug. 7 agreed to create new coaching positions at the high school.

Danielsen, the boys' and girls' soccer coach, will now have two assistant coaches during each season instead of one.

Emig, head coach of the high school track team, will be able to add one assistant coach to the roster, bringing the total to five.

Athletic Director Caleb Smith said the optimal coach-player ratio is 10 to 1.

"I believe the need is necessary for student safety and to provide the best chance for these programs to be competitive in Class 5A," Smith said in a memo to the school board.

Track and field had 65 participants in the spring. Boys' soccer had 29 and girls' soccer had 32.

Most other high school sports teams had fewer than 11 students per coach. The notable exceptions were boys' tennis (16 to 1), girls' tennis (17 to 1) and cross country (18 to 1).

In addition, the school board approved new supplemental contracts for a concessions manager at the middle school and a sponsor of the Environmental Club at the high school.

In other personnel moves Aug. 7, the school board:

•Approved supplemental contracts for Ty Unrau (newspaper at the high school, $1,000, Aug. 17) and Whitney Smith (Robotics sponsor at the intermediate school, $500, Aug. 17).

•Approved supplemental contract changes — replace Katie Orr with Sharon Colemon on the DLT 25 ($1,800, Aug. 17) and replace Deb Breitigan with Kendra Jantz in the high school Friendship Club ($500, Aug. 17).

•Approved the hiring of Christine Hailey (kindergarten aide at West, $11.25 per hour, Aug. 16) and Elizabeth Dupuis (cook, $12.65 per hour, Aug. 16).

•Accepted the resignation of Hannah Frazer (at-risk aide at Wheatland, July 25).

•Approved transfers for Staci Jones (from Title I aide at West to at-risk aide at West, Aug. 16), Patty Child (from Title I aide at the intermediate school to at-risk aide at the intermediate school, Aug. 16), Tracy Miracle (from 6.5 hours per day as kindergarten aide to 7 hours per day as at-risk aide, Aug. 16), Shawnna Driscoll (from 5 hours per day to 7.5 hours per day at The Learning Center, Aug. 16), Marty Underwood (from 3 hours per day as pre-kindergarten aide and 3.5 hours per day as building aide to 6 hours per day as pre-kindergarten aide at Abilene, Aug. 16) and Marsha Schomaker (from half-time to full-time teacher at Abilene, Aug. 14).

•Approved an addendum for Jeff Tracy (add five contract days for additional Learning Center work and meetings, Aug. 14).
