Park City prepares a ‘Salute to Freedom’
By Taylor Messick
Last Updated: June 29, 2017

Park City is getting ready for its annual Fourth of July celebration at Hap McLean Park, which will include the Salute to Freedom Parade.

This year, attendees will have access to a larger variety of activities than ever. Festivities will run throughout most of the day and night — and will be capped by a fireworks show in the evening.

"This is the biggest party that Park City has all year," said organizer Steve Brown. "We want to do as much as we can, but we can't necessarily do everything we want because we're short on volunteers. The more we get, the more we can do. Anyone who would like to volunteer is welcome."

The events will start bright and early this year, as Park City will host the only July 4 car show in the area starting at 8 a.m. The show will take place on the east side of Hap McLean Park next to the community building. More than 100 cars are already signed up for the event.

The Salute to Freedom Parade begins at 9 a.m. It starts next to Spangles and will move east down 61st North to Hydraulic; it will then turn north down Hydraulic until arriving at the entrance of Hap McLean Park. Parade awards will be given at the park following its conclusion.

A number of fun activities will take place in the park between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. There will be plenty of entertainment for the kids — inflatables, games, face-painters, train rides, and Troubles the Clown will all be on hand.

There will be performances, competitions and other fun events taking place throughout the day for all to enjoy. There will be a pet show at 11 a.m. sponsored by All Dogs Bark and Play. Prizes will be given to the most unusual pet, the largest pet, the smallest pet and the cutest pet. There are categories for dogs, cats, birds, rabbits, other and "small and furry."

"The only restriction is against anything that would be scary to the crowd," said Brown. "Don't bring your pet rattlesnake."

Other activities include a horseshoe tournament, a magic show from noon to 1 p.m. and a watermelon feed starting immediately afterwards. There will be a square dance taking place at the park from 9 a.m. to noon and The Molly Neeley Trio will be performing. Musical act, Patz, will take the stage to perform at 1 p.m. The senior center will also be hosting Bingo from 1 to 3 p.m.

There is a three-hour break from activities from 3 to 6 p.m. to allow everyone to get out of the heat for a little bit. The nighttime concert at the park starts at 6 p.m. and goes until 10. Across the Pond, OMG and Big Fat Fun will be performing. The evening will be capped off by the fireworks show, which starts at 10 p.m.

"If you go to the concert it is the best place to see the fireworks," said Brown. "The shooters actually shoot them towards the concert; so if you're there, it looks like they're coming right at you."

All activities and performances are free, including the concerts. Attendees will only have to pay if they buy food from the vendors who will be present. Folks can sign up for the parade, car show or pet show at city hall or the website: parkcityks4th.com.
