ERNEST MILLER

Ernest W. Miller, 88, of Shawnee and formerly of Wichita, died June 19, 2017. He was a former school teacher in Valley Center.

He was born June 17, 1929, in Beloit, Wis., to Orr D. and Gwendolyn C. (Hamilton) Miller. He grew up in Neal, Kan. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1952. He received a bachelor's degree from Friends University and a master's degree from Emporia State University. He worked as a school teacher and librarian for 37 years, retiring in 1994. He worked as a teacher at Park Intermediate School in Valley Center and Woodlawn Elementary, and as a librarian at L'Ouverture Elementary in Wichita. Starting in 1968, he worked as a librarian at Haysville Junior High School until he retired. After retiring, he worked at the Haysville Community Library. He also volunteered as a story reader at the Rhein Benninghoven Elementary School in Shawnee. He was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Shawnee and a former member of St. Anne's and St. Jude's Catholic churches in Wichita. He was a member of the N.E.A., Neal U.M.C., International Reading Association, Kansas Association of School Libraries and Phi Delta Kappa. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Richard and Marion. Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Dolores L. (McNett) Miller; daughter Gayle E. (Curt) Bohling of Shawnee; son Alan W. (Vallerina) Miller of Haysville; grandchildren Leah (Cody) Chambers, Jacob (Karina) Miller, Samantha Miller, Mary Miller, Calista Bohling and Virginia Bohling; and great-grandchildren, William, Jackson and Tucker Chambers, and Gabriella Miller.

Rosary and Mass of Christian burial were held June 23, at St. Martin Catholic Church, Piqua. Inurnment was at St. Martin Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Haysville Community Library or the St. Martin's Cemetery Fund. Porter Funeral Homes & Crematory of Lenexa had charge.
