50 years ago

James L. Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd J. Carter of Valley Center, was one of 15 Kansas State University students awarded individual scholarships totaling more than $3,000 for the upcoming school year. A 1967 graduate of Valley Center High School, Carter held the Kansas Farmer award.

Mrs. Edward (Carol) Reffner of Valley Center almost emptied the Merchants Thursday Night Jackpot when she claimed the first-place award of $200. Winners of second- and third-place prizes were not present.


45 years ago

Lucinda Voth, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Voth of Valley Center, received one of the seven Outstanding Student Awards at Bethel College. The awards — a stipend of $2,400 for four years of undergraduate study — were based upon high academic performance, outstanding character and high test scores.

George Baxter brought a photo into the newspaper of the old Valley Center Santa Fe depot. The building had been moved and converted into a farmhouse located south of Hillsboro.


40 years ago

Daniel R. Truman, son of Mr. And Mrs. James E. Truman of Valley Center, was selected for the American Spirit Honor Medal in recognition of his outstanding qualities of leadership and for writing a text titled "What the American Spirit Means to Me." The Trumans attended their son's graduation review to witness the award presentation ceremony at Camp Porter in Illinois.

Valley Center was getting ready for a firecracker of a Fourth of July celebration at the junior high school grounds. The Lions Club would furnish ice-cold watermelon while contestants would compete in a variety of games and activities, culminating with a fireworks display.


35 years ago

Michael Dawson, son of William and Josephine Dawson of Valley Center, was promoted to the rank of technical sergeant in the Air Force. Dawson was an administration specialist at Grand Forks Air Force Base, N.D., with the 3904th Management Engineering Squadron.

Edward Capps Jr., son of Edward Capps of Valley Center, entered the field of electronics at the Wichita Automotive and Electronics Institute.


30 years ago

Michael Belew, son of Richard and Joan Belew of rural Valley Center, took first place in the high school division of the electronic products servicing contest at the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America's U.S. Skill Olympics. He planned later to travel to Birmingham, England, and compete in the International Skill Olympics.

Connie K. Clark, daughter of Mrs. Herbert Hanson of Valley Center and Chalmers Clark Jr. of Wichita, received her master's degree in educational psychology. She was an administrator for the Girls Scouts and Campfire Association and taught special education in Derby.


25 years ago

Tammie Turner, daughter of Darlene Turner of Valley Center, was awarded the Bob Magerl Memorial Award as the outstanding volunteer at the Special Olympics basketball tournament.

Jill Snodgrass of Valley Center graduated from Hutchinson Community College.


20 years ago

Colonsay McPheeters, daughter of James McPheeters, took first place at the national forensics tournament held in Minnesota.

Jessica Osler, daughter of Don and Brenda Osler of Valley Center, was selected as a candidate in the 1997 Miss Kansas National Preteen Program at the Red Coach Inn in Salina.


15 years ago

Gary Taylor of Valley Center won a master angler's award after catching a 41-inch, 20-pound northern pike at Tramping Lake, Wekuska Falls, Canada.

Valley Center wrestler Jake Ashpole finished third in both Greco-Roman and freestyle in the 135-pound weight class at the Southern Plains Regional wrestling meet in Allen, Texas.


10 years ago

Bret Jacob of Valley Center was a member of the Kansas State University Powercat tractor design team that won an international competition sponsored by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers. He was a senior majoring in biological and agricultural engineering.

John Hagan, son of James and Sharon Hagan of Valley Center, accepted a $500 award of excellence in justice studies, criminal justice, for the 2007-08 academic year at Fort Hays State University.

Airman Conner B. Matson graduated from basic military training in the 323rd Training Squadron/Flight B383 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio.

Park City cleared the way for the Echo Hills commercial project to get underway on the land just west of I-135 at 53rd North for businesses to build on.
