Looking Back Last Updated: June 22, 2017 50 years ago Glenn Stearman announced that Stearman Aircraft Products was almost ready for operation in the former bowling lanes building in the 500 block of East Fifth in Valley Center. They had also leased the old roller rink building in the 100 block of West Fifth for warehouse, tooling and maintenance. Joseph E. Prosser Jr., grandson of Mrs. A. P. Wright, left for Frankfurt, Germany, then to Fueda, where he would attend glider school for six weeks. 45 years ago Boy Scout Troop 494, Valley Center, chartered a Continental bus for a week of camp in Colorado. The highlight of the trip, thanks to the effort of Congressman Garner Shriver, was when they would be the guests of the Air Force Academy. Bart McCartney left for San Antonio where he took his basic training in the Air National Guard at Lackland Air Force Base. 40 years ago Teenage employees of Valley Center Peter Pan were on strike. One claimed a complaint had been filed with the Labor Department, which would neither confirm nor deny if a complaint had been received. Peter Pan's district manager, Dean Hand, met with the employees and their issues were resolved. Chisholm Trail State Bank opened a new detached facility at 37th North and Woodlawn. This marked the first major expansion of the bank since it opened in 1975. 35 years ago James Catron, owner of Crown Lumber Co. in the 100 block of South West in Valley Center, closed its doors for the last time due to …"the economic situation and the lack of builders being able to pay their bills." A similar problem forced Buck Alley to close his lumber company in neighboring Kechi. The Chemlawn women's softball team, coached by Jerry Plush, was tearing up the opposition on its way to the district tournament in Park City. Chemlawn was undefeated in league play, won the Hutchinson and Halstead tournaments and took second at its own invitational. 30 years ago Melinda Johnson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Johnson, performed with the Mid-Kansas Rainbow Cloggers in the National Clogging Competition at Silver Dollar City in Branson, Mo. The group won first place for the routine, "It's a Miracle," and took second in the dance-off. Kimberly Ruth Sutton, daughter of Greg and Nancy Hall, competed in the Celestial National Beauty Pageant. She was fourth runner-up overall and won the portfolio title in her age division. Her uncle, Terry Kalp, took her portfolio pictures. 25 years ago While area farmers were waiting to get into fields to harvest the wheat crop, thunderstorms started dropping heavy rain and baseball-sized hail. Don Jacob, who farmed with his family in the area hit hardest by the storm, said he lost 50 to 80 percent of his crops. The hardest hit area was west of Valley Center, running close to Maize Road and 93rd North. Air Force Reserve Master Sgt. Darryl L. Templeton, son of Ophelia and Zearvis Templeton of Wichita, was decorated with the Air Force Commendation Medal. The medal was awarded for outstanding achievement or meritorious service on behalf of the Air Force. 20 years ago Delvin and Hazel Lewis celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house at First United Methodist Church, hosted by their children and grandchildren. He was a farmer and worked at Cessna Aircraft for 30 years, retiring in 1980. She was a homemaker. Army Pvt. Bryan K. O'Neal, son of Kenny Lewis, graduated from basic military training and advanced individual training at the U.S. Army Infantry School at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. O'Neal was a 1996 graduate of Valley Center High School. 15 years ago Lee Ann Ruthorford was named to the dean's list in the college of engineering at Colorado State University. She majored in civil engineering. Prize winners at the Halstead Bank at Valley Center's grand-opening celebration included Faith Ann McDaniel, Eugene Haydock and Jeff Hawthorn, $100 savings bonds; Kay Anderson and Beulah Rader, $50 savings bonds; Alive Lentz and Kerrick Opat, gold coins, and Shannon Haydock, James Burke and Ruth Kalp, silver coins. 10 years ago Farheen Raparthi of Bel Aire won second place in the third-grade division of the KPTS Channel 8 Reading Rainbow young writers and illustrators contest. Raparthi's submission was titled "Onion Tears." Andria Lowe, daughter of Ron and Donna Lowe of Valley Center, was promoted to operations officer, PC support, at Intrust Bank. A 1993 graduate of Valley Center High School, she had been in the operations field for several years and worked for over 10 years at Intrust. 5 years ago Crews were putting the final touches on a sign in front of the HomeTown Plaza shopping mall in the 200 block of South Meridian in Valley Center. The mall's businesses included Subway, Anne's Attic, Valley Liquor & Smoke Shop, SaBo Salon & Boutique, The Laundry Room and VK Machine Co. Inc. Jace Nibarger of Valley Center received an Achievement Award from Barton Community College for the 2012-13 academic year. To qualify, a student must be full time with a grade point average between 2.50 and 2.99. |
