Valley needs a show of unity Last Updated: June 15, 2017 Though his method may disturb some people, we can't argue with the message. Valley Center resident Tom Lille, who was the victim of a recent vehicle break-in and burglary, wants to send a strong signal to criminals: They're not welcome in Valley Center. Lille has organized a march on Meridian June 18, and he is encouraging residents to openly carry their firearms, if they want to. Lille said criminals should see what they're up against in Valley Center. He said he isn't trying to deliver vigilante justice or encourage that type of behavior. He just wants criminals to know Valley Center residents are serious about protecting themselves. Lille also said he would like to see an increased police presence on the streets, and wants city leaders to hear that message. Those are things we can get behind. Frankly, we're tired of the crime that's been happening in this community, too. Valley Center has historically been a safe, quiet and comfortable town. Unfortunately, those foundations have been shaken recently. It's horrible to hear of murder and child sex crimes, and our community should never tolerate theft and vandalism. In an effort to curb crime, Valley Center needs more people like Tom Lille to step up and keep the conversation going. The solution lies in collective problem-solving. Just as there are many reasons for crime, there are many parts in its prevention. Families, law enforcement, churches, politicians and the school district all have important roles. We want strong families, effective and visible law enforcement, an engaged religious community, fair and compassionate politicians and a whole-person approach to education. It's not too much to ask. No, we don't need violence to prevent criminal activity, but this community sure could use a heavy show of strength and passion for what's right and wholesome and good. Has it been missing in Valley Center? We think it has. — The Ark Valley News |
