Construction crews place the walls of an addition at the middle school earlier this month. The classroom will double as a storm shelter. Work on schools moves inside By Chris Strunk Last Updated: May 25, 2017 The Valley Center school district's latest facility improvements — as part of the recent $18 million bond issue — are moving forward. As soon as students left for the summer May 19, crews went into the school buildings for a massive renovation of aging electrical and mechanical systems. On the outside, additions to Abilene, West and Wheatland elementaries as well as the intermediate and middle schools are taking shape. Superintendent Cory Gibson said rainy weather has delayed some of the exterior work, but only by a week or two. The school board met May 19 to approve a couple of large roofing projects and a change at Abilene to accommodate a shift in programming. The board approved a bid of $184,579 from Martin Roofing for Wheatland and a bid of $299,266 from Midwest Roofing for the intermediate school. Three R Mechanical also won a $1.2 million bid to upgrade mechanical systems at the intermediate and middle schools. Ziegler Electric's bid of $57,516 was selected for electric system upgrades at the two schools. Because all pre-kindergarten and early childhood development classes will be moved to Abilene Elementary this fall, the reconstruction of four classrooms — including the addition of a restroom — at a cost of $112,086 was approved by the board. James Nightingale with the architecture firm working on the bond projects will give facility tours to board members June 12 starting at the middle school. In other business May 19, the board: •Approved supplemental contract adjustments for Karl Ely (Camp Hornet fitness, adjustment, $1,050, summer 2017) and Sheila Schul (Camp Hornet baking, adjustment, $1,365, summer 2017). •Approved the hiring of Glenn Burt (custodian, high school, $9.95 per hour, May 17), Shawna Driscoll (summer help, The Learning Center, $8.90 per hour, May 23), Mary Carpenter (principal, Abilene Elementary, $81,000, Aug. 1) and Brenda White (English teacher, middle school, $47,842, Aug. 10). •Accepted a resignation from Kilah Hoenscheidt (WSU para, West Elementary, May 19). |
