Words of wisdom to live by

Did you know? Each of us in America uses an average of six trees in paper and wood products annually.

Many organizations plant trees. We use paper in books read, magazines, writing paper, paper towels, paper napkins and in paper sacks and business letters, and calendars. Then it's time to recycle.

Remember to keep our troops in your prayers.

Verse of the week: "Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord and the people whom he hath chosen for his inheritance." (Psalms 32:12)

"Depart from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it." (Psalms 34:14)

"Remember to keep your words soft and sweet. You may have to eat them." — Anonymous

Imagination was given to man to compensate for what he is not, and a sense of humor was provided to console him for what he is.

At Sunflower, we like our Monday morning coffee chat, Tuesday Bible study, game nights, potluck dinners and music.

Don't pray for rain if you're going to complain about the mud.

"Remember, cars and people can be recalled by their maker." — Anonymous

"We study fruits found in Bible lands. Dates were grown in times near Jericho; figs and mulberry, too. Mediterranean fruits are tasty. The olive was a valuable tree in ancient Palestine. The almond is the first tree to bloom in the spring. The anemone is a wildflower as the famous lily of the field. Also raised for food by Hebrews were wheat barley, flax, pomegranate, melons, onions, garlic." — Anonymous

Did you know Jason has been our mailman for 10 years.

A lesson from geese: "If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay with the ones headed in the direction we want to go.

"As each bird flaps its wings, it creates an uplift for the bird following. People share a sense of community direction, because they are going the same way, in motivation.

"Geese honk from behind to encourage those in the lead. Be encouraging. Stand by each other." — Milton Olson

Kansas brands born here: The Spice Merchant building was once the building of mentholatum, a deep-heating medical rub.

Clyde Cessna started his own plane service.

White Castle (hamburgers) in 1921 by Walt Anderson, fast-food giant.

Beechcraft and Learjets.

Pizza Hut by Dan and Frank Carney.

"Sunflower" — "I was born in Kansas, I was bred in Kansas and when I get married, I'll be wed in Kansas. There's a true blue gal who promised she would wait. She's a sunflower from the Sunflower State. …

"Skies are fair in Kansas. Clouds are rare in Kansas. Never saw a place that could compare with Kansas. …

"Troubles end in Kansas, folks unbend in Kansas. Everyone you meet will be your friend in Kansas and they will all be there to help me celebrate with my sunflower from the Sunflower State.

"Oh, the moon is brighter and stars are bluer, and the gals are sweeter and their hearts are truer and I'm here to take, … she's that sunflower … from the Sunflower State." — Mack David

"Be kind, anyway." — Mother Teresa
