50 years ago

Mrs. Ron (Kathy) Henderson of Valley Center won the $550 first prize in the local Merchants Thursday Night Promotion. Another winner was Mrs. Travis (Rhoda) Anderson of rural Valley Center, who received $10.

For the 10th consecutive year, the Valley Center High School concert band, under the direction of Dwight Beckham, was awarded a "I" rating at the league music festival.


45 years ago

Army Staff Sgt. Larry V.M. Churning, son of Mr. and Mrs. Leon G. Churning of rural Valley Center, participated in the largest signal field exercise ever held in Europe. Exercise Large Signal 72 was conducted over a 20,000-square-mile area in Germany.

Girl Scout cookie sale awards were issued by Troop 30. Barbara Engle received a 12-day campership at Camp Wiedemann. Pam Huebert received a necklace and pennant. Geraldine Richmeir, Cheryl Wilson, Shelli Sharpard, Diana Engle and Kelly Adams each received a cookie pennant.


40 years ago

Robert Crow, son of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Crow and a senior at Valley Center High School, was awarded a $300 academic scholarship to attend Fort Hays State College.

Jane Hohn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leland Hohn of Valley Center, was awarded a $250 general academic scholarship to attend Emporia Kansas State College.


35 years ago

Virginia Black was selected by the Valley Center chapter of Beta Sigma Phi sorority as its Outstanding Woman of the Year. She and her husband, Bobby, were instrumental in the formation of a Jaycee chapter in Valley Center several years ago.

Jamie Knight was the overall winner at the Kansas Federation of Women's Clubs Art Festival at Sterling. The Valley Center High School student's piano performance won him a $100 scholarship. Knight also would perform with the Friends University Community Symphony at Alexander Auditorium on the Friends University campus.


30 years ago

Five Valley Center wrestling club competitors qualified for the state tournament in Salina with fourth-place or better finishes in the district tournament at Bishop Carroll. Jason Emerson  pinned all of his opponents to pace the VC wrestlers. Greg Haig also placed first in the 14-and-under division. Jason McCartney was second in the 8-and-under group, while Matt Sears was third at age 16-and-under. Logan Thomison was fourth in the 14-and-under division.

Kathleen S. Rall, daughter of Marshall and Donna Rall, was named to the dean's list for the fall 1986 semester of her junior year at Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa.


25 years ago

The number of lanes on South Meridian caused confusion for drivers as it transitioned from four lanes south of the railroad tracks to two lanes north of the railroad tracks. This prompted the city council to have the city engineer study the problem.

Don Robertson, director of building and grounds; Nelson Hart, assistant superintendent; and A. J. Koster, principal, checked out the classrooms under construction at the district's new fourth- and fifth-grade school on Meadow Road.

Several Valley Center High School students won first place during a competition in Independence. Winners and their events were Chris Cheney, lyric poem and tales with a twist; Julia Galstad, basic algebra and pre-algebra math; Kristi Lowe, news stories, and Chris Moon, character development.

Jennifer Lee, daughter of Steve and Cheryl Lee of Valley Center, was offered a president's scholarship at Bethany College in Lindsborg.

Katie Haury of Valley Center attended the Kansas Student Leadership Forum as a representative of Pratt Community College.

Three Valley Center High School basketball players were named to The Wichita Eagle's Class 5A all-state teams. Chad Wilmott was a second-team selection for the boys, while Janelle Klein and Karah Covey were honorable mention picks for the girls.


10 years ago

Keley Porter signed a letter of intent to play basketball, and Jessica Mullen signed a letter of intent to play volleyball, both at Friends University.

Valley Center students Levi Hopper, Kylee Myers and Audrey Lamar competed in the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office's powerlifting competition. Myers took first in all three of her events — hand clean, bench and squat.

The Valley Center Police Department rolled out two 2012 Dodge Chargers. The new vehicles replaced an aging Ford Crown Victoria and a Chevy Impala. Sgt. Matt Vogt said Ford quit making Crown Victorias, a model popular among law enforcement agencies, so many departments are looking for new vehicles to outfit their fleets.

Matt Lang of Valley Center was the training officer for the Wichita Police Department's winter recruit class of 2012. Lang and his wife Tobie are the parents of Sidney and Kyler Lang.
