Valley Center High School's tennis team got a jump on the other spring sports teams by hosting Maize High School in a novice meet March 16.

"We were just not as consistent as Maize," said Valley JV coach Matt Klusener.

Singles winners were Josh Dessenberger 6-4 over Phong Nguyen at No. 2, Jake Carroll 6-3 over Spencer Merrill at No. 6 and Lucas Wert 6-3 over Blake Davis at No. 10.

The Hornets came up short in the other singles matches with Jeremiah Gamble, Jacob Worman, Sheridan Peterson, Trevor Reed, Christian Barnett, Ryan Phillips and David Westbrock all losing

Doubles winners were Reed and Carroll 6-4 over Headding and Potter at No. 4 and Westbrock and Wert 6-0 over Cannon and Davis at No. 5.

Other doubles results saw Gamble and Dessenberger, Worman and Peterson and Barnett and Phillips lose.

The varsity will host Andover, Chaparral, Collegiate, Douglass, Newton and Wichita North in a tournament March 28 before travelling to Collegiate March 29.

The junior varsity will host Augusta, Derby, Newton, Wichita South, Wichita Southeast and Wichita West in a tournament March 30.
