New season of Valley Center sports underway
By The News staff
Last Updated: March 23, 2017

The end of spring break and resumption of school signals the beginning of the spring sports season for Valley Center High School. Six teams will take to the court, pitch, diamonds, track and fairways for the first time this spring.

With the venerable Dean Schulz leading the way, Valley's tennis team is the early bird, hosting a novice meet March 16. The varsity gets into action March 28 by hosting its own tournament.

Coach Steen Danielsen will lead Hornet soccer to El Dorado on March 30.

March 31 seems to be "the" day for the start of spring sports. Head coaches Nick Barnes in baseball and Corey Jones in softball will host Newton. Also that day, first-year Hornet head coach Troy Emig's thinclads travel to the Andale Relays.

Boys golf, under the tutelage of Mike McCormick, hits the links April 3 at Andover.

Emig is the only new varsity head coach this spring. The only new assistant coach is in softball, where Courtney Fields replaced Dave Friess.

Team pictures will be taken March 31. They will included in The News' Spring Sports Preview that will run April 6.
