More fun facts about Kansas

Among the dear hearts and gentle people who live here are those who enjoy our Monday coffee chats, Tuesday Bible study, game nights, potluck dinners and all our music concerts.

Thanks to Nancy for piano music and Kay Tweet for our Friday night sing-alongs.

Take time to pray for all our military — our troops — wherever they serve and their families left behind.

Verse of the week: "As God's chosen people, holy and beloved, clothe yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience." (Colossians 3:12)

We all enjoy the parade of peculiar people passing by as we go to our mailbox or visit in laundry rooms or puzzle rooms.

It's fun to read unusual facts about Kansas.

Did you know that Dodge City is known as the windiest city in the U.S.A.?

Did you know that Barton County was named for Civil War nurse Clara Barton?

Hutchinson has rich salt deposits beneath the city. Salt is mined, processed and shipped from Hutchinson.

The Oregon Trail passed through six states, including Kansas.

The grouse or prairie chicken is found in great populations over western Kansas.

Comanche County has 128 caves, and Barber County has 117 caves.

Did you know that Fort Riley, between Junction City and Manhattan, was the first fort of the Kansas U.S. cavalry? For 83 years it was the main post of horse soldiers.

For Kansas buffalo (or bison) the three largest herds are on public land at Maxwell Game Preserve near McPherson, at Ashland (Big Basin) in southwest Kansas and at Garden City's Buffalo Game preserve.

Hutchinson has a grain elevator that is a half-mile long and holds 46 million bushels.

Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.

Atchison is in northeast Kansas.

We like to learn about Kansas with information learned and printed by Jeff Newman.

In the 1800s, the Kaw River was much deeper than now, and 34 steamboats paddled. One went as far as Fort Riley in 1866.

We still enjoy our birthday parties here and walking down our halls.

Remember in April, Kansas will have citywide garage sales. It's fun to shop at local home garages to find, at a good price, all the extras people want to get rid of, all in good condition. One man's castoffs are another one's treasures!

Remember: "Be kind, anyway." — Mother Teresa
