The Valley Center High School wrestling team took time to showcase seniors on its last dual of the season against Andover. Then the Hornets showcased their wrestling skills, beating the Trojans handily.

"We wrestled really well," said head coach Tate Lowe. "It was great to have our seniors go out this way."

The dual began with Valley accumulating three wins from Quentin Kirk at 106 pounds, Carter Nold at 113 pounds and Michael Turkali at 120 pounds. The Hornets then lost their first and only match of the night with Chase Faimon, who subbed in for Devin Gomez at 126 pounds.

Valley was then victorious for nine consecutive matches, dominating Andover, which is coached by former Hornet wrestler Brett Fiene.

"Tonight was all about our seniors," said Lowe. "We have one of the best senior classes you can ask for."

Don Boone was one of the seniors to be recognized at the dual. He pinned his opponent in 30 seconds.

"All of our seniors won their matches today, so we did really well," Boone said.

The Hornets are now preparing for the postseason.

Valley Center will compete in a Class 5A regional tournament Feb. 18 at Goddard. Other teams include Andover, Arkansas City, Emporia, Goddard, Goddard Eisenhower, Great Bend, Liberal, Maize, Newton, Salina Central, Salina South, Topeka West, Bishop Carroll, Heights and Kapaun Mt. Carmel.

Valley hosted the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League junior varsity tournament on Feb. 11 and placed second.

"They all wrestled really well," said Lowe. "It was a great chance for them to wrestle a lot of matches, and it was a great end to the JV season."

Valley was able to send seven wrestlers to the finals, including Devin Delforge, Alec Flores, Brantley Loibl, Logan Case, Xavier Schecter, Brett Hamm and Ethan Bauguess.

At 132 pounds, Devin Delforge won first place after defeating his opponent from Derby. Delforge's match went to overtime, but Delforge was able to come out on top take the win.

At 138 pounds, Flores took second in his bracket, losing by decision to his opponent from Derby. Flores went into the third period tied at 2-2, but was defeated 3-2 at the end of his match.

At 145 pounds, Loibl also took second, losing to his opponent from Newton. Loibl had a close match, but lost 8-7 in overtime.

Case took first at 170 pounds. He pinned his opponent in the finals in under 30 seconds.

"It's a JV tournament, so it's for the kids to really improve," said Case. "They learned a lot and next year they'll be ready to go."

Schecter took second at 182 pounds, losing to his opponent from Ark City. Schecter's match went into overtime, but Schecter then lost after his opponent was able to score 3 points.

Hamm and Bauguess faced against each other in the finals at 195 pounds. Hamm took first, pinning Bauguess in the first period.

"Ethan and I had a very good match," said Hamm, "I fought hard."
