Looking Back Last Updated: January 26, 2017 50 years ago About 30 airplanes took part in Valley Center's annual March of Dimes "airlift," which was held at the High Point Airport. Through the combined efforts of area pilots, many of whom were represented by the Valley Center Air Force; the VC Lions Club, and National Foundation, airplane rides offered cost $1.50 for children and $2.50 for adults to raise funds for the March of Dimes. Dennis Brink, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Brink of rural Valley Center, won first place for a truckload of 15 Hampshire lambs at the Western Livestock Show in Denver. 45 years ago The first annual Valley Center Fire and Police Benefit was held at the Valley Center High School auditorium with two performances of The Ron Smith Show featuring the one and only Clumsy Clem, the Ozark's favorite comedian. Funds from the benefit were used for supplying communications receivers to the fire department and police department personnel in order that they could all be instantly alerted to an emergency. Navy Airman Michael E. Shewmake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy W. Shewmake of rural Valley Center, completed specialized training in the maintenance of the "Hercules" aircraft at the Marine Corps Air Station, El Toro, Calif. He was a 1968 graduate of Valley Center High School. 40 years ago Valley Center residents had to do without water for a few hours. A main line leading from the water tower on the east side of town broke due to a ground shift that sheared the cast iron pipe in two. The city hall phones were ringing off the wall, with everything from angry callers to the curious and concerned. And it wasn't until nearly 1 a.m. the next day before the repair was finished and service restored, thanks to a large crew. Helping out were Bob, Larry and Lonnie Tormey, Bob Charles, Guy Sawhill, Gary Dutton, Corky Armstrong and Mayor Bob Girk. Mrs. Edna Bushow of Valley Center was elected chairman of the South Central Kansas Library System. 35 years ago Cy Crossette was elected president of the Valley Center Cultural & Historical Society at a meeting of the board of directors at the home of outgoing president Marcelyn Harris. Lois Riley was elected vice president and Katy Vogt was to serve as secretary-treasurer. Jamie Knight, a sophomore at Valley Center High School, performed with the Friends University Community Symphony Orchestra in the Friends University Fine Art Center. Knight was the winner of the concerto contest held Nov. 21 at the Duerksen Fine Arts Center at Wichita State University. 30 years ago Ed Terry won the microwave oven given away during the drawing at the grand opening of D's Convenience Center in the 100 block of East Main in Valley Center. Ed Tennissen won 25 gallons of gasoline and Kent Courtney won 10 gallons of gasoline. Lana Schippers, daughter of Iris Schippers and granddaughter of Irene Shewmake, both of Wichita, was selected Airman of the year for her squadron at Alconbury Air Force Base, Alconbury, England. 25 years ago Tony Taylor of Valley Center was named to the honor roll at Cowley County Community College, Arkansas City. Kim Barnes was named to the fall semester 1991 honor roll at Wichita State University. She planned to teach mathematics. 20 years ago Football player Brandon Clark was named to the Kansas Sports Magazine second-team offense (all classes) and first-team Class 5A. Andy Guhr was a second-team selection in Class 5A. Daniel Rudick was an honorable mention selection in Class 5A. West Elementary Principal Bruce Anspaugh said the school had a new Channel 3 weather lab. 15 years ago State Sen. Christine Downey was a member of the "Ask Your Legislator" panel on KPTS Channel 8. Members of the Valley Center Leadership Class of 2002 were Terry Alderson, Bobby Black, I.D. Creech, Mark Gies, Frank Griffith, Chris Jay, Brenda Ketron, Roger Maris, Ivan Moore, Christie Newman, Trisha Schmidt and Rob Tormey. 10 years ago Ruth Martin, fourth-grade teacher at Wheatland Elementary, was given a surprise party by her students after being inducted into the National Honor Roll's Outstanding Teachers Group. Army Reserve Pvt. Jayson L. Robbins, son of James Robbins of Kechi, graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. 5 years ago Valley Center High School winter homecoming king and queen candidates were Lindsey Luna, Sarah McCormick, Bailey Pritchard, Alex Charles, Austin Taylor and Kirby McCallum. Ark Valley Chiropractic moved from Park City to northwest Wichita. Janie Pirner had many patients in the Park City area. She was sure many of them would continue to go to her new location for their chiropractic needs. |
